My best advice would be to get a thorough demo of each platform and see how each one would fit into your workflow.

Both offer excellent solutions with excellent software to back up their products. The choice will come down to your workflow and how the units will work for you.

Having used leica and Faro scanners with both vendor software solutions i can say that each will offer both good/bad and frustrating elements that will test you and frustrate you.

We currently use Faro and have 5 units on the fleet. We register all data in Scene and export E57 to third party plugins to generate CAD deliverables for both the Architectural and Civils based industries.

These units work very well for us and we have a very good workflow that suits our needs and the needs of our clients.

I have recently demo'd the RTC360 and can say that there are some very good points to the unit but equally in my opinion some not so good points (Just like the Faro units).

Both offer realtime solutions, both offer colour hdr, both are small lightweight and compact. One has excellent VIS navigation and speed and faster in the field but has very heavy file sizes that will require massive storage solutions to be considered.
The other takes longer to capture and therefore slower in the field but vastly smaller file sizes so quicker to process and smaller data storage requirements.

As with all hardware manufacturers i am sure that they monitor each others products and no doubt Leica will work on their file size and Faro will work on their speed in the field.

And at the moment at least for now we are sticking with the Faro solution.

Buying a scanner will be a costly affair and you will need to be certain that it will work for you. You will hear both good and bad reviews for all of the solutions out there and it would be unwise to be swept away with any flavour of the month. Get a demo, test the solution well, even get both vendors to demonstrate at the same time so you can compare like for like and ask the same questions to both parties.

Basing the decision on your requirement and how well you understand the solutions offered will ultimately ensure that whatever platform you do choose it will be a choice YOU made and will be right for YOU.

Well. What Simon said. Not much else to say really. Nicely put sir.

I would only reinforce that ultimately the process output is the most important thing and it is easy to lose sight of that if you get too wrapped up in the getting of the scans.

The customer cares not a whit about how easy it was for you to acquire and process the data. If you give them what they expect when they expect it they will come back to you.

Both Leica and FARO have the ability to generate steel and pipes, but FARO will allow you to model walls & floors, doors, & windows in BIM. Not sure if this is needed in your particular workflow, but in the A/E industry its extremely difficult to switch over to a Leica solution when FARO provides better post-scan documentation. I have semi-annual meetings with regional Leica resellers just to see if they have come any further. Leica hardware and registration software is extremely good- no question about that. If the registered scan is your end product then Leica might be a great solution. However If BIM is your end goal, I would give FARO a hard look.

Cheers!
Not sure what you mean by this? Leica Cloudworx modeling in Revit or Autocad is far easier than any solutions I have tried to so far.

To my knowledge, Cloudworx cannot query the point cloud and accurately place a wall, window or door family of the correct size and shape at the location of the object found in the point cloud.

Well if your talking about creating dumb extrusions with some of the other software out there, its no better than creating line work anyway

You mean not yet. March should leave you really happy or really sad...
