SPAR article:

Leica’s RTC360 lidar scanner registers your point clouds automatically, in real-time, in the field
...
"The VIS works independently of GPS signals, as you would expect, but it also allows users to scan without holding the scanner in a specific way, or putting it on a dolly. “You can just pick it up,” says Mayer, “and walk around without thinking about what’s happening in the background.” Clearly, someone at Leica has been working on this for quite some time."

Just going to go ahead and say it, because it is kinda funny...it looks like a Faro scanner

That Visual Inertia System looks pretty interesting. I guess it uses some form of sparse photogrammetery or videogrammetry to calculated rough initial position of the scans. That is a pretty cool idea...wonder if it works in the dark?

Ended now a demo at Leica italian HQ.
I'm not a Leica guy, but I honestly have to say that this time they have built a dispruptive equipment.

The VIS tool is amazing.
Done several scans not using the software on the tablet, moving the scanner on different setups and setting up it with different orientation.
Downloaded the data and open them with Register 360 and... bum! All scans in correct position and orientation. Just needed to apply fine registration with the push of a button.
Small to average size project can be done much quicker onsite and without the need to spend time in office for registration.

Other very cool features:
very good HDR
26s scans at 12mm resolution at @10m, plenty enough for most interior application
two side 360° scans, gives the opportunity to automatically remove moving people or cars
really clean and easy to use Register Field app interface
the Register Field tablet app work with a subsampled set of data, so the download is really incredibly fast

Add the small size, that it's 6Kg (with battery), and that is possible to use it upside down and even at 90°.

Only one issue... the size of the data.
High Res (2GB) Average Res (??) Low Res (180MB)

Thanks to Simone Oppici (HDS Sales manager) for the opportunity to play with this new toy!

Jonathan,
I've seen a video where they show all the 5 videos collected, overlapped by points automatically recognized in real time by the software (dozens for each one).
It seems the algorithm has been strongly optimized to work in real time.
They said that you can even walk for two minutes with no major issues calculating next setup position.

That's cool, thanks for confirming some of my assumption. I think knowing if it works in the dark is a big concern, but unless the cameras are night vision then I guess that is where the feature is a bit handicapped. I would not normally care, but we do a inordinate amount of scans in the dark...more than we really like.

I second that, Jonathan.

Hi Jonathan, yes, I can confirm the RTC360’s VIS works in the dark (by design and tested by our very own Steven Ramsey).

Wow, go Leica engineers and devs! Really good to see that this feature was very well thought out and robust. Call me impressed :)

Thanks for the info.

Plus my testing. I haven’t managed to fool VIS yet. It has eyes like an eagle.

Nice feature.
I guess for big scansites which need several days of scanning, you need to do the registration manually to merge each day of scanning. Or is there a way to orientate the scanner after it was turned off?
