I have a large scanned a large building which so far has taken 2 days to scan. I have used a ScanStation2 for the upper level detail and a HDS6000 for all the lower level detail and around the grand entrance stairway. The scanning has still to be finished on site but I had spare day to register what I have done so far. Would it be best to register all the data together at the end or in small areas as the work progresses?
If I do register what I have done so far what is the best technique to gain the best results? So far I have registered all the ScanStation2 data together using the surveyed control point’s then cloud constraint this data together then frozen this data and created a modelspace registration. I have also done this for Day 1 of the HDS6000 data and again for Day 2. Therefore I now have 3 registration modelspace’s. In theory all this data is now in the correct coordinate system then I have registered these 3 data sets together and created a large model space of what I have done so far.
Is this the best way forward or do I need to register all the scanworlds together when the whole job is finished? Or would this be an acceptable way to register the large amount of data?

Re: Cyclone Registration of Large Data Set
You could try creating a seperate registration then importing the ones you already have so you can cloud register the HDS6000 data to the SS2 data, you could carry this on after your next visit. Register day 3 to check if it works then import the registration in to your large pot that way at any point if you just want to see data from day 4 HDS6000 you can open that space or the complete thing as they will both be on the same grid.
Are all the 6000 scans cloud registered or do they all have trgets as well.

Re: Cyclone Registration of Large Data Set
Both the HDS6000 data and the ScanStation2 data are controlled with co-ordinated targets then cloud constraint after then frozen to create a registration. So far i have 3 registration files which are all on the same co-ordinate system.

Re: Cyclone Registration of Large Data Set
All you need to do is to create a new one then use the registration/import registration option hit register and the we be combined. you can then use the auto add cloud constraints after setting the relevant preferances.

Re: Cyclone Registration of Large Data Set
Hi Phil
I have the same problem whith larges Scans.
Until now, I don´t know the best way.
But I did some tests in a smooth surface
First Test: Registration with scans alones with data Total Station,
Second Test: Registration Scans alones with data Total Station and a finaly registration with all scans and targets (removing the targets with more errors) .
Next I created Cross Sections in the two tests, and I had more accuracy (less noise) in the second test.
Best regards,
Delio Pontes
