Software to extract scan locations from LAS files

Post by cbaze »

I have hundreds of LAS files, and I want to extract the scan location of each of them into a CSV file so I can show them in a floor plan. Is there software or a script that can easily do this for me?

couple of questions.

How was the .las created and was it exported from and registration file and not unified?

Do you have example of the file in question, even only a few hundred mb?

Exported from RiSCAN_PRO. Can't make any sense of the files when opened in notepad, copied and pasted example below.

LAS files are binary and not readable in a text editor. For a full definition of the latest version of LAS see http://www.asprs.org/wp-content/uploads ... _4_r15.pdf To the best of my knowledge, LAS does not support scanner location for terrestrial scans.

It has to be able to, because when I bring these files into Autodesk Recap they all appear in the correct location without registration.

Because they are merged and unified (this is called as unstructured cloud), so all of them has the same coordinate system which is defined before/during export. In las there is no pose information they are just a bunch of points it does not have info about which points comes from which setups, unless you give some information about that. For example when you convert it from e57 which can have (not necessarily) pose information.

I don't know about extracting the Location of each scan to a file, but if you use the newest version of Leica Reg 360 you can import all the LAS files as pieces of unstructured data (Choosing "Pre-Registered" on import).
Each of these LAS files will then have a PSeudo "SETUP" point located at the CENTROID of each unstructured LAS file area. There then MAY be a way to extract that info from the Sequel Lite DB that Leica uses. You can then actually go into the "Pseudo setup" and look around at that particular LAS scan from that viewpoint.
However, if you do this make sure you do not move ANY of the setup points, especially if the LAS files were sliced and paired down for easy export. They will probably match edge to edge if that is the case with no overlap. We had some mobile data delivered this way to us. Once you move it, there is no way to match exactly because there is no overlap for re-registration.

Great facility to have in Riscan but it depends on having this data in the LAS files to start with which is not going to be the case. If the data can be re-exported from Riscan this would certainly be the sensible option. Steve Long's solution may be a potential workaround, we do something similar in SCC where we store input file details as an alternative to setups where they are not available for selection purposes. That said, Chris is after the exact scan locations which just aren't there in the input data in coordinate form. If I had to do this, I'd import all the LAS files into a model, look for the tell tale blank circles surrounding the scanner location and do a circle fit to estimate the 2D centre. Not sure it is possible to reconstruct pose or even height of instrument though I have seen academic papers covering this topic.
