Forum RSS feed down

Post by jedfrechette » Tue Aug 23, 2011 3:30 pm

The forum RSS feed seems to be down. The page:

http://www.laserscanning.org.uk/forum/feed.php

reports the following error.

Fatal error: Call to undefined method phpbb_feed_overall::is_moderator_approve_forum() in /home/lasemar1/public_html/forum/feed.php on line 690

The breakage seems to have occurred on or about August 7th.

It looks like the RSS feed has been down since yesterday morning. It would be great to have it enabled again.

Thanks!

Hello Jed,

We are currently updating the phpBB software and configuration for LSF, and at the moment we have decided not to activate the RSS feed due to security implications and misuse.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

Best regards,
Jason Warren

Out of curiosity, what security implications and misuse? Isn't it just a read-only xml file?

On a more personal level, how am I supposed to keep up with all of the amazing content that get's posted on this forum?

Hello Jed,
Here is one topic and there are many others if you do a Google search:
http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/an ... ware-flaws

If you logon to the forum and use the Portal - User Menu, this will help you keep up with all the new posts etc ... ;)

Ah I see, the concern is that malicious code in the feed could compromise the user's machine. I thought that you meant the RSS feed could be an attack vector against the LSF site.

Given that, as a user, I already need to trust that the LSF website doesn't contain malicious code, I don't see much additional risk in trusting that your RSS feed also doesn't contain malicious code. Since organizations ranging from Microsoft to the National Vulnerability Database use RSS as one way to distribute security alerts, there must not be anything fundamentally dangerous about the tech.

I don't have a Portal option in my User Menu. Although I'm sure the Portal will be great once I can access it, it's not really a substitute for getting content automatically pushed to my device. I simply don't have time to visit LSF regularly and check for new content. Instead of being able to at least skim pretty much every post, as I'm able to do now, I'll probably end up checking in once or twice a month and hopefully find a few interesting topics that happen to be on the front-page on those days.

Judging by other sites I follow, I paradoxically visit the ones that have RSS feeds more frequently than I do ones that need to be explicitly checked for new content. By automatically pushing the content to me I'm able to see a higher percentage of it and end up being more engaged because I'm more likely to see something interesting. On the other-hand, nobody else seems to be missing the LSF RSS feed, so there must not be many of us who find it useful.

Hi Jed,
I think we have managed to get the RSS feed back online, plus the Portal too...please can you check for us? ;)
