Point cloud classification
my background is in earth sciences, so I am very familiar with point cloud classification (vegetation, bare earth, etc...)
Has any work been done on classifying points within a building? beams, columns, floor slab, walls, piping, etc...?

Re: Point cloud classification
nothing yet that I know of, funny we was talking today about this with Leica.
Tools exist where they detect the shape and can place beams/pipes/walls. But nothing i know exists to actually classify the points.

Hi Thad,
The new release of Trimble realworks have something done for classification. Just have a look to that:

Re: Point cloud classification
Danis,
That is pretty cool. I guess that is more along the lines of what I have seen in earth sciences (bare earth classification).

Re: Point cloud classification
Hi Thad,
We added some functionality to SCC last year to automatically classify points based on density in relation to a reference axis. At its simplest, if we use an axis parallel to the front of the building this allows us to automatically break the point cloud down into walls, floors and everything else. We originally wrote this for customers using the GeoSLAM which didn't have any colour, but find it useful for a lot of other scenarios, (Video below is somewhat out of date but gives the idea). We've since extended it to allow the reference axis to be any complex 3d line, such as a road or rail centre line and other density functions.

Re: Point cloud classification
Stamford demoed something a couple of years back .. youtube video of it somewhere. It was recognising walls, filing cabinets, chairs etc.
Google naturally have their cars - different domain, but same requirement.
SiteSee are doing stuff with machine learning and telecom towers .. a fellow Brisbane based startup and mates .. have scanned and flown a few towers for them ..
https://www.spar3d.com/news/software/si ... l-analysis
Bentley have said they are working on it.
Infraworks can classify trees, street signs, lights .. can follow road markings ..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScFJ4FmDN0Y
Give it two years it will be everywhere.
My 2c .. best systems will use images (far easier to train ML systems!) and _optionally_ laser for recognition. Classified mesh is probably the winner longer term. Once you start playing with mesh .. you don't want to go back!
