Pointcloud Data with SolidEdge ?

Post by TMillington »

Does anyone have knowledge of SolidEdge users making use of pointcloud data?

SolidEdge is the ‘default’ CAD used here and we are getting increased interest in supplying scan data that CAD operators can use directly. At present we generally have to either model or mesh scans and then supply STEP files but we’d be really interested if there are any options for viewing/referencing the scan within the CAD (similar to the way that AutoCAD and MicroStation handle clouds).

From all my enquiries so far I suspect the answer is that it’s not possible (SolidEdge really doesn’t like point data in any format anyway) but if you’ve any ideas I’d be interested to hear.

Thanks

Are you able to load raster images into SolidEdge?
If that works, creating DXF files with ortho photos of scan point clouds could be an option. You could load them in SolidEdge and use them for your modeling.
Many scan registration tools are able to export orthophotos of the scan data.
