Point Cloud to Model

Post by mrhunt »

I am at a crossroad. We do a lot of scanning, mostly industrial. The modeling I do is mostly simple jobs as piping and tanks including tank deformation in 3dreshaper. I am getting more requests for complex modeling. My current project is modeling a small drill rig on tracks (picture the lower half of an excavator with a crane boom attached.

I only use Autocad Mechanical for modeling. I have access to Inventor, Plant3D, Revit and 3dsMax but have only used them a few times. Should I venture away from Autodesk for 3d modeling from point clouds? Geomagic looks promising. What would be a food software for modeling larger pieces of equipment with intricate smaller pieces? TIA

I would suggest you try the Rhino 3d V6 / Veesus combination.
Rhino by itself is relatively cheap, easy to learn, works well with E.57 files and can output to many common CAD formats.
It doesn't need Recap, Jetstream, cloudworx etc.
It is great for complex surfaces such as boats, planes etc.

I would recommend that you buy the Veesus plugin for Rhino if you want to work with huge pointclouds, It is very fast and very stable.

Nearly all of the work on my website has been done with Rhino.

+1 for Rhino. It's cheap and you can also do some decent renders with it.
I have had to do some animation of models and found that Blender can produce some nice results.

Mike,

Do you have any Comparison Analysis for the following three softwares for Point conversion ,loading efficiency, Server setup and Application plug-in integration ?
We want to server point clouds on the web & portable to our Clients/Consultants

-Veesus-Arena 4D, Server & Rhino Plugin
-Euclidan Vault & Viewer
-Jetstream Server & viewer & Cloudworks plugin

Hi,
I would suggest that you try a demo from each of the software providers.
I thought (and I am often wrong :) that Jetstream is just Euclideon in Leica colors ?

Mike.

Not quite. It is true that JetStream "Includes Euclideon technology as well as components licensed from, or copyrighted by, other parties..." but Leica / Hexagon has incorporated the Euclideon 'Unlimited Detail' massive Point Cloud rendering technology into their much larger JetStream Suite of tools.

But, back to the topic of this post, you can try Euclideon's own and much cheaper Point Cloud viewing platform with some useful tools at: https://www.euclideon.com/vault/

It works across WIndows, Mac, Ubuntu (soon iOS and Android) and also there is a WebAssembly version that runs under Chrome and FireFox.

Is it just a viewer or can the pointcloud be integrated with ACAD/Design/Modeling products for extraction and modeling through your own/other plugins?

Infact, our primary business model is to provide the SDK for free so you can incorporate our point cloud technology into other products / plugins. Our best-in-class solution is for massive, sparse Point Cloud, so the best solution is for users to be able to stay inside their existing workflows and integrate Euclideon Vault SDK into it.

Euclideon Vault Client is primarily a viewer, but it has some very useful features, such as change detection, contours, distance and line measurements, map tiles, native obj and ESRI slpk, cross-section, export to other formats, IOT live feed and many more.

To demonstrate our commitment to the SDK model, we have released our Vault Client as open Source on GitHub, so you are welcome to copy our code and customise into your own applications, or contribute to the project by adding new features. https://github.com/Euclideon/vaultclient
