The point cloud generated by Apple ARKit with iPhone/iPad without 3-D camera is highly noisy.
However, one of the advantages of the current combination of ARKit with iPhone/iPad is that the measurement distance is limitless if you can translate large enough your iPhone/iPad.
You could even measure the moon by using an iPhone/iPad IF you could translate (i.e. without rotating) enough your iPhone/iPad.
The passive 3-D measuring method (photogrammetry, stereo vision, multi-view geometry) will govern in 5 years. The active method (laser scanner) will disappear.
The machine of passive 3-D measuring method will be given with multi-view multi-spectrum high-resolution 2-D sensor plates for 3-D measurement. The Human will be chasing nothing.
Fighting words, but worth tucking away for future reference. AR will certainly be more useful once improved dimensioning tools are in place, but working from tablets and smart phones is not really practical for many spaces. SLAM, lidar, photogrammetry, and software will all get better, prices will drop. Algorithms will rule the world and probably make us dumber. What could possibly go wrong? :D

In next few weeks we will be rotating a virtual airplane around the dome in an amuse park in Korea.

In order to obtain a point cloud of large dome by using a single moving camera e.g. iPad, we have to secure a sufficient parallax between 2 succeeding images. We will ride a bike.

Today morning I visited the amuse park. The dome is smaller than I guessed. I could get point cloud (the yellow points) by walking around the dome 5~7 m apart.

We have experimented on ARKit with an iPad Pro.
Even though the point cloud is highly noisy, CurvSurf FindSurface extracted successfully a sphere for gym ball and a plane for floor. The extracted sphere and plane are in contact.
