If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

It looks very nice solution but require textured object or variety in the scene.Great effort and thanks for sharing.

Re: NAVIGASENSE Open Source Portable 3D Laser Scanner
Thank you IngSayyad for your kind comment, actually the scanner currently depends on visual features that could be found naturally in textured objects as you said or by adding extra features deliberately if you don't have enough variety in your scene.

Some features which are found naturally in a car engine compartment. Every feature is surrounded by a small square and has white dot at its center as shown in the figure below, also the perpendicular green lines represents the world coordinate system.

Very cool. I remember when I first discovered the David Laser Scanner and I can't tell you how many hours I spent with that system. This looks like a great start to the scanner.
Once I get back from vacation, I'll have a deeper look at the overall system. Please post more videos of actual scanning. It appears to me like the scanner can be scaled up by increasing the distance between cameras and the laser...is that so?

Re: NAVIGASENSE Open Source Portable 3D Laser Scanner
Thanks Eugene you are welcome , forgive me for the lack of videos, of course I will prepare more videos to demonstrate the actual scanning.
Actually the distance between the cameras and the laser is currently fixed but the laser elevation angle could be adjusted, anyway I think you have a good point because adding this extra degree of freedom by letting the laser line move up and down will contribute in minimizing the measurement error much further. I will be honored to contribute in your ideas, and I hope we can work together on future projects.
Have a nice vacation.

Scanning a shoe:
Here I used my handheld laser scanner to scan a shoe putting some handmade visual features on two pieces of paper along with a checkerboard to help as natural landmarks for the tracking operation to take place during the scanning, this is a video to show the the scanning process. Currently I am using an old core 2 due computer to conduct my experiment, the laser scanner itself was built using webcams and a cheap MEMS sensor.

And this is the 3D model of the shoe which demonstrated using Meshlab.
