Buying a scanner for indoor construction sites
Hello LSF community, I have been scanning with a hired FARO x330 for 6 months now on mainly indoor construction projects with the occasional outdoor capture perimeter of a building/rooftop.
The x330 has been reliable in many conditions and the usual setting I use requires 4:50 mins for a single RGB scan. Picture quality is important for our clients aswell as RGB colour.
My company is looking to invest in a new scanner that's lightweight and compact enough to carry onto a train and take into London along with all the other essential gear we need to take for one person.
It would be nice to register on site aswell as it's very boring and time wasting hiding behind a coloumn waiting for a scan to finish.
The Z+F 5016 and Leica RTC 360 is interesting with its onsite target less registration but does it work well indoors with no GPS?
Many thanks for any input.

Hi Bobby.
i’m pretty sure that, as you figured out, Z+F Imager 5016 is exactly what you need: the best hdr photo, on site (and on time) registration, lightweight, for factor and reliability.
I think there is a 5016 waiting for you and charlie cropp is ready to help you.
i’ll send you by pm her email address

Re: Buying a scanner for indoor construction sites
I appreciate the replys but would the Z+F work indoors to register on site without GPS? In a basement for example. Anybody who don't work for Z+F Confirm this?

Re: Buying a scanner for indoor construction sites
Hi there,
Thanks for the intro Gabrio! Whilst yes I work for Z+F I’ve also been working with scan data for the last 16 years!
I can confirm that with the additional sensors (IMU, Compass, GPS etc) the 5016 works very well inside and out.
Essentially the sensors provide a pre-registration alignment, the onsite processing completes a full cloud to cloud registration in a matter of seconds live using Scout software. Once the scans are aligned you can inspect the quality of the registration and data captured before you leave site.
As well as excellent HDR imagery, survey grade accuracy it’s a great solution.
I always say the proof is in the pudding - more than happy to demonstrate the system to you. Drop me a DM!

Re: Buying a scanner for indoor construction sites
You seem to be concentrating on the hardware, What about your down stream software solutions.
the Imager is a great bit of the kit, you mention the P50 which would be completly over the top but worth checking out the RTC360 as an alternative

Get a demo of the RTC360 on a live site and you won't be disappointed. Drop me an email: [email protected] and I will put the right person in touch.bobbyf90 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 6:52 am Hello LSF community, I have been scanning with a hired FARO x330 for 6 months now on mainly indoor construction projects with the occasional outdoor capture perimeter of a building/rooftop.

I have already ruled out the Leica scanners as I believe the P50 to be too large and the others not good enough to capture what we need to see quickly.

Many thanks for any input.

Re: Buying a scanner for indoor construction sites
Thanks for everyone's opinions I will do more research and be in touch. For software I tend to use recap for its user friendliness with target less c2c and ease of assigning shared coordinates.
But to do registration on site and cleaning/georeference back on the laptop in recap would be great. Are these scanners cross compatible with recap? Many thanks.

Re: Buying a scanner for indoor construction sites
Recap is scanner independent so as long as the registration software exports compatible formats you are fine.

Re: Buying a scanner for indoor construction sites
My personal advice would be to not use RECAP for "registering" RTC360 data - or data from any first party solution. It will simply not handle the volume of data you will be producing on a daily basis with the RTC360. Do the registration first in Cyclone REGISTER/Cyclone REGISTER 360 and then export to RCP format (coming in April) if you want to consume it downstream in the likes of Autocad (or in your case, Revit).bobbyf90 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 10:19 am Thanks for everyone's opinions I will do more research and be in touch.
