Z&F5016 Dome Effect
Has anyone come across this effect when scanning with their 5016?
It is a Dome like effect around the Scanner.
Cleaning the lens seems to fix the issue but can it just be a dirty lens that is the cause?

yep a dirty lens can and will do this. Something to do with how the dirt reflects the light straight back in to the receiver.

Re: Z&F5016 Dome Effect
Hello,
The same things happen to us. We contact Z&F to fix this problem, but nothing can be done. We try to apply a filter in Cyclone, but it deletes the bubble and a few points, so it's worse. We think it's due to the return of intensity.

We had the same problem, Please check your firmware version. if it is not "V9.0.2.6296-i5016-zf" contact support.
Also you can filter this dome shape noise by following this steps in ZF control:
Select the Preprocessing plugin within the Workflow Assistant and click the Preprocessing Filters tool (icon of 3 masks)
The following window will list all project scans on the left, Filters to run as a batch in the middle, and the Ranges on the right
Checking only the Intensity filter for all scans, with 1% Minimum Intensity and 100% Maximum should work to remove the domes
(Note: You can check the box for “Use_2_Masks” to separate the Min./Max. filters, but this is optional)
Verify the scan data to ensure that the desired points are removed. If not, remove the filter and attempt it again with modified values.
It seems that you import the ZF 5016 data into Cyclone, make sure you export scans while the intensity filtered applied before export otherwise you will still have the noises.

Re: Z&F5016 Dome Effect
Cyclone’s Phase based scanner setting dialog allows you specify the minimum and maximum range for different type of scanner.

Re: Z&F5016 Dome Effect
Thanks for responses guys. The image above was already run through the pre processed filter in Laser Control.
We are finding that we have to clean the lens every 5 or so scans when scanning externally.

Re: Z&F5016 Dome Effect
Hi Robert,
Yes, this effect can appear if the glass is dirty. You can think of it like this:
Imagine you are looking through a very dirty windscreen. Depending on how bad it is, in the end you are only going to see bright objects. Dark or less intense objects will not make it through the dirt on the glass. The points you see in the point cloud are caused by reflections of light in the glass, causing a wrong measurement. However, the intensities are still pretty low compared to other nearby objects. Hence the intensity filter is the best way to clean these points out.
The 5016 is designed to pickup smallest intensities even from a long distance and thus, the intensity defaults are kept pretty low.
Although it is recommended to always keep the lens clear, if you don’t worry about longer distance shots or very dark surfaces, it should not be a problem to simply increase the intensity defaults a little to filter those points afterwards.
Let me know if you need any help.
Merry Christmas everyone and a happy new year!
Best wishes,
Chris

It happened to us with a RTC360. Is there way to fix this in Register 360?
