Best Scanner for Vehicle survey

Post by hoho »

Hi everyone,

i am about to finish a scan project of a bus. We scanned with our Faro X330 (quality 4, resolution 1/4), the poincloud we got from the scanner is not very clean, i supose the surface is too glossy.

Does anyone have good workflow how to clean the clouds of a shiny surphaces using Scene, Cloudcompare or Geomagic?

Does anyone have an experience with similar project, which scanner gives the best results? I think Surphaser should be better for this purpose. Am I right?

Thanks a lot

Jan

If you can scan again, you could try reducing the power of the laser on the scanner and/or "dulling" the surface of the bus with a baby powder/rubbing alcohol solution (dry shampoo or foot powder spray also works).

The only option I know of in Scene is manually cleaning up the individual scans.

The X330 is a very capable scanner and should have captured it just fine. I too would recommend decreasing the power of the scanner or taking scans further back from the vehicle.

How do you decrease the power of the scanner (faro x330)? Do you mean decreasing the " Quality " from 4x to 1-2x or the resolution?

Thanks,

Thanks,
Try taking your scans further away from the vehicle first. If needed, you could reduce the quality from 4x to 1x-2x

Use the Edge Artifact Filter and it will clean up some of the noise. However, be forewarned that if you don't have enough scan positions, you will likely clean up some good points too.
