Scanning in two faces

Post by MedoLedo »

Hi everyone,

I am making a short survey about the panoramic scanners in the market. I need your experience and help with one question. If and when you have time, can you please answer the following:

*) Which device do you use and can you make measurements in two faces with it? Is it easy or complicated with in built software?

I only have experience with Leica ScanStation P20 and it is quite easy to measure whole surrounding in two-faces. But I am not sure how easily is it done with other scanners. It is very useful information for eventual scanner calibration, deformation monitoring and performance testing of the scanners (for example if you follow development of the new standard test procedures of the American National Institute of Standards and Technology).

I will share with you the summary of the survey once it is completed, if you are interested.

Thank you very much for the help.

Hi,

We use Z&F Laser Control software to check our 5010C scanner.
Im not sure if is possible to setup the scanner manual to scan in two faces but the application inside the software do that.
We check our scanner with 10 permanent B&W targets and also against Leica TS30.

Below a report I did last week.

Thank you very much for the reply.

I find this very interesting. I have no experience with Z&F software. Now I tried to find a bit more info about the "Z&F System Check" but without much luck. Do you need to place targets on some predefined places or they are arbitrarily distributed? And when you do the target-based registration on the field can you select scanning of the targets in two faces?

I apologies for many questions, but this is an interesting topic.

Hi again,

About your question about the targets, see below how Z&F advice.
The second question, I dont know any way to setup the scanner manual to scan in two faces and I almost sure that the scanner dont have that option.
Only when I run the "system check" but its all automatic, I dont need to do anything.

We have a Trimble SX10. Since it combines features of a laser scanner and those in a totalstation, we can set up each position shooting onto control points by measuring rounds, ie 2 faces. Is this what you mean?

Yes, that is what I mean. Thanks for the input.
Generally, every panoramic scanner, or the scanner like this one you use should be capable of doing it.
However, as far as I understood in many cases this is not supported by the instrument's software, which I find very strange...
