Dear All,
I have the opportunity to purchase an "un-tested" HDS3000 laser scanner.
The scanner is apparently un-tested because the vendor doesn't have the Cyclone software required to test. The vendor states that when powered up the RDY light turns on and is red.
Does anyone know if this is a normal status for the RDY light on the HDS3000?
If the scanner does have a fault, how easy is it to get this unit repaired and would the costs or parts availability be prohibitive due to the age of the scanner?
The scanner cost is approx £1,500. I would very much like someone elses opinion on whether they think this purchase would be worth a gamble in the event the scanner has no fault.
The scanner will primarily be used as part of a projection mapping project and also for some non-engineering based measuremnts and imaging.
Many thanks for any opinions, advice and info offered.
Also looking for information on availble batteries, AC power supplies and other ancillaries.
Best regards,
Gabriel

Well, I guess you would need Cyclone in order to use the scanner.
As far as I know Cyclone is needed for scanner control.
Not sure how much Cyclone is though.

Re: HDS3000 Worth a Gamble?
Many thanks for your reply Jana.
We have a good deal with our hydrographic equipment rental companies who would loan me a Cyclone dongle (we use Cyclone for an acoustic subsea scanner called Blueview) for the test and can rent from them at a day rate for any projects we use it on.
It is the red RDY light that is concerning me. Is this normal for a power on at an un-connected HDS3000 scanner? Or is this an error light?

Sorry Gabriel,
I never worked with an HDS3000.

Re: HDS3000 Worth a Gamble?
Last used one of these in 2005... from memory the light should be green or yellow, not sure which when fully booted. The only way to tell is to plug in a laptop and run diagnostics. I had one break down once with a red light and it turned out to be the avalanche photodiode array or something like that at fault - the scanner had to go back for repair.
£1500 is good if it works - for the money I would recommend hiring one in if only for the odd job.

Re: HDS3000 Worth a Gamble?
I don't think you should judge whether it's working correctly or not based on the colour of the LED.
If you're looking for a cheap but good all round scanner (if very slow by today's standards) then the 3000 is probably a very good option for you.
But at the same time, if you're looking for cheap, then repair costs and calibrations probably aren't in your budget.
It would be worthwhile borrowing or renting a copy of cyclone with a Scan and Register licence, and testing the scanner before handing over the money and driving it home. But i'm guessing this is an ebay purchase or similar, so maybe not possible.
The price is only good if its fully working. Theres a reasonable chance you're going to be left with an expensive, heavy office ornament.

Hi Stephen,
This post was from 2014 and I think they did go ahead and buy the unit. I do believe its still working to this day so fingers crossed this may continue.
