@ Mike: Faro seems to experience some of the same issues... as per the attached. ;)

A lot depends on the lighting of course,
Here are a couple of indoor and outdoor shots from our Faro Scanners.
You can see a Red Leica box in our office... so I am being impartial. :)
We have a couple of Leica MS-50s, ..again their onboard cameras aren't quite as good as the Faro cameras.
Cheers,
Mike.

Office - nice uniform lighting... excellent red box BTW ;)

Outdoors - sun behind scanner and object well illuminated, so I would anticipate good results.

I don't want this to become a 'battle of images' but I have some more examples here from the P20, old and new firmware.

I am sure you can pick holes in all these examples, but truth be told, the P20 camera is not as bad as people seem to think and you can get excellent results. Please note that all of these have been down-scaled :)

Maybe it's me, but for the samples I showed, and the images showing the actual point clouds colored with the images from the P20's digital camera, i am very impressed. I cannot compare to any other units (Faro, ZF) since I don't have those in my possession. I cannot get the raw digital images since I no longer have the P20 accessible since I used it with a former company I was at.

Nice results Paul, does Leica camera bracket exposures (HDR like) or has it adjusted from single shots?

Thanks Paul,
Is it just me, or do those images seem to be badly stitched together ?
Why is the image so patchy ?
We use Leica Publisher as a deliverable, the best images ( Bang for buck) come from a Faro Scanner.
Cheers,
Mike.

Paul - hexagon edges are all visible in all those images, which is a problem for some of my clients.

Part of the issue I have with the camera is the time it takes to record a full panorama. This is not just because I'm impatient ;) but because the lighting conditions can change quite a bit in that time. The blending function in cyclone tries to smooth this out, but it isn't perfect. Not only that, but because it exposes a tile at a time it can be frustrating when cars or people (who weren't there when you started photographing) get in the way. The number of times I've seen a floating head or torso from a person walking by....it totally ruins the work. For this reason we use the external camera workflow - even if it is time-consuming as it really enhances our projects.

It is possible to get nice photography from the C10/P20 (and I have done so on numerous occasions) - however, until the lack of HDR and speed of capture is addressed then I think there will always be situations where the photography is wanting.

Hi All,

A direct sunlight 360 panorama image from FARO as a dummy 3Dscanner user with minimum knowledge about exposure, gamma correction and so on.

The battle of the integrated cameras continues

We don't use the P20. But we do use the C10 (a lot ;) )

Taking photos with a C10 adds about 25% extra time to a scanning project. And that's why we hold more than 15 terabytes of scan data projects, with only a very small percentage of them including images. I think the C10 and P20 take a similar amount of time to capture photography, might be wrong on that.

When I think back to the old days and think of cameras, I think of Leica ;) and then wonder why it's so slow now?

I have never used a Faro Scanner but I keep seeing great images coming from them.

very much depends on the scene. you can get some awful panos in bright sunlight and of dark or semi dark scenes. Until manufacturers start equipping scanners with quick 360 HDR cameras the quality will vary and will never be 100% reliable.

and if we are ever to use pointclouds as end deliverable it needs good quality color overlay
