I am glad to see that finally someone is using plumbing components to register scans. I used these ages ago in the desert once when we had no other choice and they worked perfectly, just stuck in the sand here and there!

The algorithm in cyclone for fitting a sphere works every time in my experience and once you have a model of a sphere then you have a centre point. These of course only work as coincident targets and don't line up well with a total station, unless of course you have a know height over a known point on the ground.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.
