Which scanner for Oil & gas As-Built - price concern

Post by Yudhistira »

Dear All,

I would like to ask, which 3D terrestrial laser scanner is got the lowest barrier for accuracy meet to use, for As-built modelling in Oil & gas Application?
I want to buy the scanner but one of the main poin is price concern.

The software that we use to RE is Aveva PDMS, Smart Plant 3D, or Naviswork.

S70 and a good 1 second or better total station.

We've captured over 1000 oil and gas sites for prefabrication/engineering and as-builting purposes. You don't need to look any further (we've already tried) and the price point is as low as you're going to get for doing this kind of work.

There's a newer value-oriented S premium unit out that you can look into pricing on, it will be faster and the data will be a bit cleaner.

Edit: This will be the indisputably cheapest viable option that still retains scalability and achieves the level of accuracy/detail required for engineering/fabrication grade work.

You can opt to skip the total station if you are working on very small areas, not moving datasets to site control, or not doing your own control network layout. Based on the application for as-builting in this space I would recommend keeping it as you'd typically be needing to do larger areas.

There is currently a lot of interest in the unstructured scanners like NavVis, due to the speed of capture. No comment of accuracy and precision as this can really be up to the client. Some don't mind others do

Leica P40. Works great for this application. Even a used calibrated unit can be picked up for a good price from a dealer.

Thank you for the Input,

i would like to ask, regarding our client requirement, is to use Explosive proof Equipment, or should have explosive proof certified , due to the explosive prone zone in oil refinery and gas refinery.

any input on this? or can we have a solution/ mitigation for this?
maybe using a hot work permit?

Whether you're working in a defined "explosive" zone or not is completely dependant from the local situation and safety precautions. Difficult to say from here but if you would need a "safe" scanner forget about doing it with a cheap kit. Z&f has a safe scanner but the cost is very large compared to a normal one.

https://www.zofre.de/laserscanner/3d-la ... err-5006ex (unit mentioned above)

I love the way the 5006EX looks, looks like it could take quite the punch (extreme environments).

Hot work permits and/or fire eye bypass where applicable has been sufficient for us across 1100 oil and gas sites in the last 6 years.

If it's an explosive environment, you shouldn't be in there either, and generally scanning work is not so critical that the working environment cannot be made safe for a reasonable duration of time.

Except for scanning fuel tanks/fuel bunkers/other very odd situations.

As Scott already mentioned, ZF 5006EX is the only explosion proof laser scanner available. Let me know if you may need more information.
I think there is a used (it will come with 6 month warranty) one.

I am interested in renting this scanner, anyone know if this is possible here in the UK?
