Describing laser scanning to possible clients.

Post by cpw006 »

Does anyone else sometimes have issues with clients not understanding the full capabilities of laser scanning? I was wondering if anyone has come across an article that describes in simple terms exactly what laser scanning is, how it works, and lists some of its endless uses. The reason I am asking is we have a client who wants to read an article on this topic. We have shown him examples and given him a review on what is does and can do, but it is not sinking in with him for some reason.
Thanks for your help.

Or you could try on the wiki page for 3D Scanners.

If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Maybe you want to check out this here...
P_OT_EN_Infografik_Laserscanner_e-mail.zip
It´s been made by our marketing department and is by purpose quite graphical and tries to keep it short and simple.

We think it might be easier to just sell the deliverables and say we use "voodoo magic" to get them faster and more accurate. Its easier. :D

Seriously, selling "laser scanning" to someone who does not already understand it is almost a waste of time. Sell them the end product they need and keep the method out of it. Teach them about the "laser scanning" as you go. ;)

Here Here Richard, I have been banging on with that one for years. Sell your services not your equipment.

Think about it when was the last time a company said I will use a tape measure to do that. There is no such thing as a laser scanning job just deliverables based on scanning. Scanners are just another tool in the toolbox.

We are going through the same thing GPS did 10 years ago. GPS is really black box technology.

I'd go with Steve and Richard on this and not just because Steve has a great name :)

What I would add is that approaching people about 'Laser Scanning' is a great way to get their attention, especially in the current economic climate where people are far more willing to pick up their phones. It's hard to get on new clients radar by saying, "We want to do your survey work, it produces the same sort of deliverable just in a different way but with more options."

There are still a lot of companies who don't really know what laser scanning is, so still open on, "We want to do your survey work and we use laser scanning" but once you actually get someones ear then it's a case of selling them what they've always needed plus the added value that the survey holds.

BIM will also help get peoples attention for laser scanning, whether you like that or not :D

My 10 cents, 1/2 a penny worth (whatever the nasty exchange is at the mo).
