P40 - irregularity scanlines

Post by marijnbogers » Wed Feb 22, 2017 11:10 am

Dear all,

We have done a laserscannning job with a P40 laserscanner from Leica.
In 40 - 50 % of the scans we have encounter an irregularity in the horizontal direction of the scanlines.

Please see attachments.

Has anyone encountered this as well? What is the cause of this and how to solve it?

It appears randomwise, so it's not especially due to vibrations, magnetic fields, wind, etc.

Leica Benelux says it has something to do with the internal motor.

Kind regards,

I have seen this happen on rubber footed tripods when they are fully extended and not very stable. The data lines up (thanks compensator!), but looks weird like this.

looks like vibration (caused by unstable footing). If you watch the scanner durring the scan, it will wobble back and forth as it turns.

Depending on how bad the vibration was (and how the scans will be used), it may not cause an issue. It should still be generally accurate, but if you look at walls they will have a "S" wobble in them.

Get a dolly. ;)
