Issues with Horizon - Anyone experiencing this?

Post by max72 »

I purchased an Horizon some months ago and I was ecstatic on how it fared well in any situation I faced.
After dome months I started having issues with the scans, and while support offered his help the scans were not fixable.
While I'm scanning at a slower pace than at the beginning I have bad scans, and the ratio is very high (10-20% of the scans have issues).
The bad scans are usually related to interiors, but not necessarily in the most demanding areas. Support suggests is my fault, but while I take more care I keep having issues, and they are not necessarily decreasing. Moreover at the beginning everything registered fine even if I took less care in the scan process.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of issues with Horizon? How often?
I attach a couple of sample scan results to better grasp the issues I'm having. What goes crazy is a room or a couple of rooms during the scan process. Sometimes it happens also at the end.
Thanks in advance,
Massimo

Hi Massimo

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

We have looked into your ongoing support case with our support engineers and have found this to be an environmental factor rather than a user error or hardware problem. We found no issue with the IMU or the sensor and the concern appears to be related to areas where there are very narrow corridors and duplicate sections. We can also see that our engineer has suggested an alternate way to scan this particular environment which follows our SLAM best practice.

We suggest scanning this section multiple times creating several closed loops and also try scanning through doorways backwards to ensure a larger coverage of the area. You can also read more about our best capture techniques on GeoSLAM Academy https://geoslam.com/academy/prepare/.

If you have any further questions, our support engineers are more than happy to work through this query with you.

Thanks for your reply.
Nonetheless it must be noted that:
- the issues appears also on wider environments (you have the sample data)
- sometimes support suggests to walk thru doors sideways, sometimes with other orientations
- I still have this increasing failure rate (and checking the old successful projects I scanned very severe environments).
- Now when everything works fine the dataset are terrific, even in very narrow and complex areas
- Main question is: is anyone else experiencing this problem? How frequently? In the first months I had 0 failures and excellent reconstruction, now the failure rate is rather high.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I guess not.. mainly because I had no upgrades and the problematic scans are increasing in number. At the beginning everything was simply perfect and worked everywhere, in any condition. Moreover support didn't suggest any kind of upgrade.
I tried to get rid of any possible interference (earplugs, phone, etc), even if in the first months everything worked fine in a general carelessness.
Gut feeling says something is behaving funny, and it feels like hardware. The cable looks excellent and extremely sturdy, while everything else is inside a very nice enclosure. Nonetheless sometimes the issue kicks off, but it's not repeatable.

Is anyone willing to share a couple of reconstructed trajectories from their Horizon?
In the work directory, under the name of the project, there should be a file called
results_traj.txt

If possible of interiors, but any project is fine.

Thanks in advance,
Massimo

Hello massimo, I experienced the same problem with zeb horizon and Support suggests is my fault too. we purshased this product two months ago and yet we started to experience this. I am more convinced now that its a hardware problem and I am afraid we experience this more in the future.

Α distributor from Geoslam had told me that horizon devices are more noisy and more problematic from zeb revo devices.
