FLS files & RGB

Post by Dedken » Tue Feb 17, 2015 2:18 pm

When importing FLS files into CC, RGB doesn't appear to be supported unless I'm very much mistaken. Is this planned for future releases? Also, if one edits an FLS in CC, will the RGB in the original file be retained when exporting from CC?

Cheers.

EDIT: it appears we're sorting this through the Github channels..

Good point. I don't normally use fls or Scene projects in CC too often (usually just the exported cloud) but it's good to know if this is a bug or by intent. What's interesting about this is if we can get color, then there is no longer the need to import a massive point cloud for decimation. I could do it by simply importing the Scene project and then calculating the spatial filtering (in theory).

Please keep up posted.

Here is a little update on this subject:
  • the initial version of the FARO plugin was only importing the 'reflection' values as a scalar-field
  • we tried to import RGB values instead but no luck, we get the same grey 'reflection' colors (but as RGB components ;))
The FARO LS SDK is very simple. The only information about this in the documentation is:
With the default settings, the functions will load the scans with color information if it
is available
.
Even FARO Scene LT only displays grey reflection values/colors (but the pictures associated to the scan are accessible). And Ken told me that in Faro Scene you have to explicitly 'apply' the pictures to view the RGB colors.

But Recap does load the right RGB colors right away!!!

Anyone knows what's at stake? Does Recap do the 'apply pictures' job automatically? How?

[EDIT] If the images are 'applied' in Scene and the file is saved again then it can be successfully imported in CloudCompare in RGB. So that's a solution.

I still wonder how Recap does it automagically ;)

It would be great if these types of development questions could get asked and answered on a StackExchange type bulletin board that the development team monitors rather than private email. I suspect a lot of people trying to work with the SDK are coming up with similar questions and only needing to answer those questions once could really improve efficiency. Not to mention, leveraging the knowledge of more experienced users of the SDK.

Hi Jed.

Every development partner of FARO is supported by our team.

The official documentation for the FARO API is publicly available on the internet.

Since in software development the majority of issues and problems are very specific.
In addition, both involved parties agree in keeping mutual knowledge of the IPs confidential.
Therefor I do not think a public forum would be helpful.

Not that my experience is definitive, but I've found almost the exact opposite to be true. Almost every development issue I've ever encountered, from setting up a specific project's build environment, to design best practices, to how to call a specific function; have been things that someone else has already encountered. Judging by the success of sites like StackOverflow that doesn't seem to be a unique experience.

Ok, how about a private forum then, although if the questions are about usage of a publicly documented API I'm not sure what IP there is that needs protecting. Just to give one example Autodesk does it both ways. Their AutoCAD developer forum is private, while the analogous forum for Maya is public.

I know I can almost always get an answer to any user space question quicker here then from support, simply because the number of people who might know the answer is greater. I would be great to have the same resource available for development related questions. Crowd sourcing and all of that.

Still no progress on being able to import FARO files with the RGB information applied?

I just sent in a bug report after testing...still not loading a raw scan even when you choose to load the RGB.

I also just processed and exported a single scan with color as .fls and it doesn't work either.

...speaking to Daniel G.M. tomorrow so will ask.
