Get JPG files from the 360° view

Post by Sebastienhec » Fri May 17, 2019 4:01 pm

Hi,

I am in a project where I need to create 360° views from my scan positions (in greyscale color). In some ways, it will looks like the scan explorer, but really easier to use.
To do this, I need 360° cylinder or cubic images from my scan position.
We are using Faro scanners, with no pictures taken (only grayscale). For some reasons, I cannot use the preview made by the scanner on the SD card.

I tried few things :
- Creating image from TZF : It creates a cubic image, only if it is a colored scan
- Creating a Thumbnails : it makes a terrible picture

It is frustrating, because I know that the picture displayed in the scan Explorer is stored inside the TZF file, but I can't have direct access to it.

I tried to find a way to get these images from an exported E57 file, but I found nothing.

Do you have any idea ?

Thanks

Although this workflow doesn't take place inside RW (and I'm really not interested in stepping on any toes here), I will suggest a no-cost work-around for you to consider since you are using FARO Scanners.

1. Download SCENE LT (Free)

https://3d-apps.faro-europe.com/product/scene-lt/

2. Import/Process the scans

3. Export the compensated grayscale panorama at the scan resolution (In this case it was a 2MP JPEG file for a 1/5 resolution no color scan. For a 1/4 resolution color scan, the file size was a 4MP JPEG file.

If you take color scans, you can also export a full resolution color panorama (up to 5x HDR or the hybrid LI-HDR) image, which can be quite a bit larger.

*Note that you can also batch export images from all scans in a project, or from all scans in specific clusters.

This feature was added last year in the SCENE 2018 release.

Let me know if this is helpful for you.

There are two ways to do that.
  • You can explicitly export all the 360° images from TZF files (with both color and intensity) using the Export menu
ExportImages.png
  • Using Import and Register tool, all imported scan will automatically be generating all 360° images in the output folder
