It's been possible to create single sided meshes for quite a few months now.

Cool, Time to take another look.

Mark:

I do not have a survey from others, but I would like to see both PRC and U3D for 3D PDF as export options. If only one, I vote for U3D. I am assuming that having import and export functions for 3D PDF would double you total time, I vote for export first.

I don't think Sequoia's ability to mesh point clouds of this size is really unprecedented. Polyworks has included the ability to run their meshing tool distributed across an unlimited number of machines ever since we've been using it, so almost a decade. Using our in-house tools, which are really just some thin wrappers around poisson surface reconstruction, we're regularly doing point clouds in the 1-5 Billion point range on standalone workstations. I doubt we've needed to do 10 Billion, although I'm sure we could if pressed. At least for us, actually generating the meshes isn't much of a problem, it's other parts of the pipeline that are the bottle neck.

All of that being said, I would drop all of our custom tools in a heartbeat if I could replace them with Sequoia. The integration with Deadline is a big part of that desire. The ability to better take advantage of all of our on premise compute power and knowing that when we need to we can instantly scale up by adding AWS instances would be great. Even if other vendors were talking about distributed point cloud computing, I can't think of any of them with the experience to make it work. Deadline has been around for a long time and is well proven so I look forward to how Thinkbox will be able to leverage that asset as Sequoia continues to develops.

Just received my Thinkbox "Deadline" trial license and will let you know how it works. I will load it on two backup dual Xeon servers to convert E57 scan files to Sequoia SPRT files. Then to mesh the SPRT files to XMESH files.

Figured out why the mesh generated above was "lumpy" with the help of Thinkbox support.

The first mesh was done with a world coordinate system using State Plane Coordinates, which uses 10 significant digits. This apparently causes problems with the meshing. the work around is to move the point cloud closer to the origin of the world coordinate system (the second image).

For those that are interested, Sequoia v1.0.22 is available. If you are running v.1.0.1, v1.0.22 has a switch which allows the use of a non-native windows file read/write. The native Windows 8.1 file read/write on my laptop, crashed most of the time.

Other improvements in Viewport, Pointloader, PointRegionOf_Interest, Mesher and Hacksaw.

We had the opportunity recently to attend a web demo with the Sequoia team and what a great solution and price point. I am looking at some low cost solutions to work with FARO Freestyle Scan data to Mesh and 3D print a variety of forensic items. We have had customers asking to 3D print small crime scenes (such as a garage shooting), evidence such as guns, bones, skulls, vehicles (whole and parts), impression evidence to replace traditional casts and molds and are excited about what Sequoia can bring to the table.

Below is a mock scene of a suicide that Ian meshed in a matter of minutes before my presentation at IAFSM last November. A little more massaging to fill the gaps and we would have a very interesting 3D model to print for a trial. Thanks Ian!

Sequoia v1.0.27 has been released. For Riegl users, they have an point cloud import that uses RDB 2.0-rds. We have tried with terrestrial scans and it works, but have not figured out registration and mobile scans yet.

Eugene: The interesting thing about the two images above, I thought that the imported single VZ400 scan was pretty ugly without being able to see the lines on the field. After meshing it with Sequoia, the lines on the field showed up, so I zoomed out to see how much of the field of view was captured by the meshing. Surprise! It looked significantly better like you said.
