Dear all,
I'm working in a hydraulic lab where we create scans of scale models with movable beds. Therefore, I have multiple scans of the same model in many different states. I'm looking for an appropriate software to carry out the two following tasks:
- 'Clipping' of point clouds using 2D-entities, like a polyline of the project area. This 2d-entity could e.g. come from a CAD-Plan.
- Creation of cross sections at specific locations. Is there a software that allows importing existing polylines and using them for cross-sections or profiles across pointclouds / meshes?
Thanks a lot for your help,
Florian

Welcome to the Forum Florian
I'm sure there are a number of programs that will do what you need. You could look at cloudworx for sections in CAD or 3D-ReShaper for automatic placement of sections.

If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Hello Florian,
Welcome to the forum!
You can have a look at the beginning of this video to see how cross-sections are created over 2 entities in 3DReshaper:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xqoCVZs4v4
The sections can then be compared to see the deviations between the scans at time 1 and time 2.
On this example sections are created on a tunnel, but the tools can be used for different applications of course.
Feel free to contact me if you'd like a demo!
Jennifer

Re: Software for cross sections and clipping of point clouds
Hi,
In CloudCompare (http://www.cloudcompare.org/ - open source) there's a 'Cross section' tool (currently it only works on point clouds but the next version will also be able to perform clean mesh sections):
http://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/in ... ss_Section
And the 'Graphical segmentation tool' has been upgraded to let the user import its own segmentation contour (typically from a DXF or SHP file) instead of drawing the polyline manually:
http://www.cloudcompare.org/doc/wiki/in ... ation_Tool
Eventually you may also want to take a look at the new 'Extract Section' tool that has been made for hydrology applications:

Hi Daniel,
I'm using CC since some weeks now, but I missed downloading version 2.6.1 in which the 'Extract section tool' was added. What a great enhancement, it is exactly what I was looking for! The possibility to import existing polylines for segmentation is also perfect for my needs.
I will try to contact you in the next days to talk about other applications and eventual future developments.
