meshing 11k sqm area

Post by joseramilo » Mon Mar 05, 2018 4:55 am

Hi,

We're looking to mesh a historical project which is around 11k sqm. I've tried to use RealityCapture's trial version. Using a couple of exported files from Recap like e57,rcs and pts but it keeps on crashing. Also tried FaroScene 7's meshing feature but not happy with the quality of the textures. Can anyone suggest a workflow using Reality capture or suggest another software. Here's a snapshot of our project.

The machine I used is an Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 2.40GHz
64GB RAM
NVIDIA Quadro K2200

Any suggestions would be of great help. Thanks

did you try Faro Scene with multiple clip boxes in an array format and have the maximum number of meshes in each clipping box, this will dramatically improve the result.

To be honest I would say it is down to your RAM, keep an eye on it the next time you open it and see what it does. When meshing objects I typically have to split them down into tiles The latest project I did, was only 1sq/km and it was split into 6 tiles each tile using around 45GB to make each tile. If you need help I can maybe do a bit of the processing for you. I use Bentley Context Capture to do my work.

Hi.. Yes I did give Faro Scene another try on a smaller project. Created a Project Point cloud first before creating multiple clip boxes and the result is way better. Thanks

Hi Bashar. I just got the trial registration code for 3Dreshaper.. I will definitely give it a try... We have cleaned our point cloud data in Recap. What format would you suggest I export the data into 3dreshaper? TIA

The format that is most commonly used is ply, also it depends where you want to take it from there, I will check 3d reshaper, in the next few days,

Jose, Bashar,

lots of formats can be used from Recap to 3dreshaper (or any other meshing SW): PLY, but also LAS, LAZ, PTX, E57...
The one I would recommend is E57 as this is the format that keeps most of the information (scan position, color, intensity) and can also embed pictures from the scanner (for texturing the mesh for example).

Do not hesitate to ask the suport team at 3dreshaper for some tips about how to make the best use of it!!
They'll be happy to help.

Take a squiz at ContextCapture while you are it .. might take a while, but the mesh is pretty good - also produces scaleable meshes ..

And if you fly it/photograph it - you can merge the data sets ..

11km2 is not messing around - so that is probably something you would throw at their "Centre" edition - basically a node-based processing option - multiple nodes all pulling tiles to process off the queue ..

You can rent it .. by the month .. whatever .. depending on if it is a one-off project.
