Mesh Output File Workflow

Post by jtayl71 »

I have been asked to scan a storage tank so that a tank deformation analysis can be performed. I will not be doing the actual analysis but our deliverable will be a mesh/solid. They have asked it to be delivered in one of these following formats: stp, sat, igs, or x_t. I'm wondering what would be the best/most accurate workflow to accomplish this from the pointcloud. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Your task involves two major workflow issues: 1) converting point cloud to an accurate mesh; and, 2) converting that mesh to a usable CAD model per your client's requirements. There are many ways to skin this cat but also many ways to get a less-than-usable result, so be careful. Geomagic DESIGN would probably be my first choice because it handles both tasks well and will allow you to export to STEP/IGES/SAT (along with several other formats).

Mark,

Thanks for the reply, I will look into Geomagic, in my searches I have seen many people mention it.

Hey Greg,

I'm still trying to get it all ironed out. Once I am done with it I will report back to you and let you know.

Hi John,
You could also give a try to 3DReshaper. It offers perfect tools to clean and/or filter the cloud automatically before creating an accurate 3D mesh.
It is very easy to get the level of precision that you need in the mesh thanks to the meshing in 2 steps.
Once you have a mesh, you could either export this mesh in *.stp or convert it to a CAD model (through the CAD menu). Once you have a CAD model, you can export it in IGES or STEP format.
You can download a free trial version of 3DReshaper from here: http://www.3dreshaper.com/en/software-e ... e-software
Contact the support while you test so you can be guided!
