Sampling Point Cloud

Hello all,

New to forum. Me and one of my colleagues did laser scan of church ( app. 40 scans ) with Faro scanner. Registration was done in Faro Scene and then we succeed to convert data to point cloud.
The problem is we can't use this point cloud due to it's size ( app. 120 GB ). We try to sample point cloud ( reduce density in Scene with column/row reduction ), but file size is still too big for our needs. With clipping box we manage to show only one facade . Export this point cloud as .e57 and import/export it in ReCap again as .e57. Final file we're trying to open in ArchiCad and Rhino. We can open the end file, but performance is very low.

So, in general I'm looking for advice how we can reduce file size, so it can be workable. I'm familiar with MeshLab, but I get an error when try to open point cloud ( exported after ReCap as .pts ). Can you recommend another solution, that would fit our needs? We need to reconstruct wall ( no colors ) in order to generate drawings.

Start with the exported .e57 file from Scene and open a new project in Recap.
Select the .e57 file and in the right hand upper corner you can click on "Scan settings". There you have 2 options:
Filtering and advanced, click on the advanced icon and you'll get some options (decimation grid, Coord sys and Up axis).

The thing you want is decimation grid.
I can't really tell you where to set it but play around a little with it (I don't know the density of the scene pointcloud). It will decimate the pointcloud that you are about to import.

I'd suggest to import once with something like 15mm decimation grid, and another with 100mm decimation grid, you should clearly be able to see the difference and adjust the final decimation accordingly.

The decimated pointcloud can then be exported again and used in your desired programs.

Hello and thanks for reply,

I have played a little with decimation grid in ReCap.As far as I remember ( maybe I'm wrong ), I got an slider for grid scale ( from 0 to 10 ).I have checked this function, but never run export of such file.

Right now I'm trying to import point cloud into ReCap and this would take lot of time, so probably I would be able to post some results tomorrow.

Doesn't rhino have this ''decimate on import'' somewhere in the import options?
That might be even easier.

If you have the computer for it, CloudCompare has a good subsampling function. I usually subsample around .005-.01m.

I know you can also do this in Recap as well by exporting as a unified point cloud.

Hi Todor,

you can also subsample pointclouds in Scene 6 (and this works in LT version as well) when creating Project Point Cloud (PPC). Just open your project click on Create PPC and set Cell Size in homogenize Point Density to your desired spacing. After PPC is created you can export it using clipping boxes. Just be careful, Scene 6 project is not compatible with previous Scene versions.
