Cloud comparison software

Post by JoshK »

Hi Folks,

i have been asked to do a couple of jobs that require cloud comparison and/or could/mesh comparison. i have found 3D reshaper and Cloud Compare, but just wondering what else is out there if anything?

a couple of thoughts come to mind in what i might need.

one of the jobs is a civil type job and the client wants a report on erosion. it is of the side of a "hill" so the data set on each location is 4 scans, so the data size will be very large. i have already converted this to a tin mesh, but i can see a major benefit being a cloud to cloud comparison in the way Cloud compare does it.

one of the jobs is a wear liner comparison and they would like to be able to see not only wear but deformation if the product manages to get behind the liners.

so a software that can handle both of these jobs would be preferential.

the other thing is that i need to be able to produce some kind of report from the software. in the case of job one i need to do a loss of material report and the second a ware over time report.

is there anything out there that can do these things? i am not to worried about cost if i can get what i need but a free trial of the software would be a huge bonus if it means i can test the workflow first. thanks in advance for any help.

thanks gents.

Poly works only looks like it is for doing really small stuff.
from their website:
"PolyWorks|Inspector is a powerful industrial 3D metrology software solution to control tool or part dimensions, diagnose and prevent manufacturing and assembly issues, guide assembly building through real-time measurements, and oversee the quality of assembled products by using non-contact point cloud digitizers and single-point contact-based probing devices."

will it handle bigger scans and data sets from terrestrial laser scanners?

SiteMonitor 4D looks to be a total permanent installation? by the looks of their website, the software they sell is reshaper unless i am mistaken?

Hi Josh
I've had a quick look at the website of 3d laser mapping describing their site monitor 4G solution and I can tell that it's not reshaper behind!
Even though you are right, they do resell reshaper.
As for your use case, it seems to me that reshaper would definitely do the job!

PolyWorks / ImInspect - Is not just for small items. It can handle - extremely large data setts - multi km projects.

The ImAlign Cloud to Cloud - Alignment tools are fantastic.

Trimble RealWorks enables to create inspection maps for visualizing and measuring shifts between two surfaces. The two surfaces may be two point clouds, a point cloud and a mesh, or two meshes. You can use planar projection, cylindrical projection or even 'tunnel' projection, i.e. along an curved alignment. For cases for which you can't use a projection onto a surface, .e.g., for monotoring objects movements, the 3D inspection tool produces a point cloud colored by the 3D distances to the other surface.

Hey,

regarding the contribution of tchaper, as far as I figured you always have to deploy a plane for comparison which the process will be made onto. I do not want to define a plane. Any way?
