Direct Metal Laser Sintering (3D Printing Metal)

So they can actually print metal now! Slightly more worried about this than about the plastic gun.
If you want to make something simple, then take one thing away that still allows you to do the job. Don't add two more things, and say they both make it easier.

So we can start to print our own laser scanners now?

Very handy.

Assuming it's not a hoax... then possibilities are endless I guess.

It looks like Autodesk bought a company that writes software for this technology:
For example, Delcam's PowerSHAPE, PowerMILL, PowerINSPECT and ArtCAM CAD/CAM software supports machining of laser-sintered metal. The CAD software provides for electrode design, 2D and 3D milling, including support for continuous five-axis operations, and a technology for on-machine verification.

I recently visited Autodesk's Pier 9 workshops...

http://www.xconomy.com/san-francisco/20 ... -autodesk/

They have invested a small fortune in real estate and equipment...

they have a woodshop, metal shop (with a good old Bridgeport!), and CNC shop with a 3 axis water jet cutter and a 9 axis Mori Seiki high speed cutting center that can almost do this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnIvhlKT7SY
btw this video is the best bit of CNC work I have ever seen...

So Delcam's purchase may yield better CNC work... and software for cheaper tool path programming!

whats odd is that instead of putting the army of 3D printers on show they have relegated them to the second floor loft... and most of the machines are the Objet multi-material machines with not SLS MLS in site... but maybe thats for a different workshop ;)

Check the guys at shapeways.
http://www.shapeways.com/

They have a lot of 3D printers, printing metal too. The nice thing is they have model specs for each process.
If you upload a model you can choose the material from a drop down and check the cost.
