Colouring points by distance from a plane in Autocad
I don't know if anyone out there can help with this one but is there a way to apply a shader (much like the shade by elevation function) to point cloud data in Autocad based on the current UCS? To elucidate; I need to draw an elevation and to bring out the fine ornate detail I'd like to colour the data based on its range from the current plane I'm working on, however Recap only recognises the world UCS as the basis for shading by elevation. Is there a way to force Recap to ignore the world UCS and treat the current plane as the reference surface for colouring by range?
This probably isn't the clearest question ever posed, but if someone has any ideas they'd be much appreciated!

Caleb,
Thanks for your response - do you know if it's possible to do that from a vertical plane defined in AutoCAD, so that your ramp stretches horizontally away from the plane? I'd like to trick AutoCAD into thinking the up direction is perpendicular to where it normally is, as it were... I might not have been that clear in my question!

Do you have cyclone? If so you can export the cloud with the Z+Y axis flipped then take this into Recap.

That's a good shout Phil, looking at acquiring cyclone so that might be the best option in the future. Cheers

Re: Colouring points by distance from a plane in Autocad
If AutoCAD can shade by elevation, you could probably do this by adjusting the coordinate system in ReCap (using the 'Update Origin' tool). It allows you to set a UCS based on a picked point (origin) and two planes (X and Z). You can adjust any or all of the three to set 'up' however you'd like. Might be a workaround.

Ryan, I presume that when you export as either RCP or RCS for inserting into autocad this change is maintained? Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

In AutoCAD the elevation shading can only be applied along the world UCS Z axis. You can rotate the point cloud itself to get what you want. No need to do it in Recap, you can do it in AutoCAD directly.

Why not just do it in CloudCompare and then export the coloured point cloud from there?
