Removing unwated points inside a tunnel

Post by pneil92 » Thu Nov 02, 2017 7:31 am

Hello forum members,

I have acquired some old scan data of a series of mine tunnels which have been collected using a ZEB-REVO scanner. I would like to be able to create a 3D model of the tunnels and determine their volume by creating a mesh of the roof, floor and side walls. The software I have available to me is 3D Reshaper. The problem I am having is that there is a lot of internal “noise” within the tunnels from parked vehicles, steel structures etc which I believe affect the volume calculation. What is the most effective and efficient way of cleaning up this noise or meshing without including them? I really don’t want to have to manually try and delete all the unwanted points inside.

Any suggestions appreciated

Here is a small example of the dataset, you can see the structure running along axis of the tunnel as well as two cables on the left hand side. This is at an intersection where two tunnels join.

Hi PNeil.

I am not familiar with 3D Reshaper, though I am quite sure there is not quick 'automated' removal.

If you have Recap, it could be done quite easily. My suggestion would be to hide the features you WANT (ie the walls, floor and ceiling) then just delete all remaining points, and then unhide the hidden stuff again.

If its too much of a hassle I dont mind giving it a go for you. just send me the pointcloud ;)

Pneil,

The other day I discovered the P.C.V. plugin within CloudCompare. It is a very useful tool for extracting the excavation of a mine room while filtering out all the infrastructure. I would try using that and then creating a mesh in 3DReshaper.

Hi Phil,

in 3DReshaper, there is a tool which we have dedicated to this functionality since version 2017.

It is demonstrated in this video:

at 53' of the beginning of the video.

You should give it a try. It is available in the menu Surveying/Tunnel extraction.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, very helpful.

I will have to update my 3dreshaper to the latest version and have a try with the tunnel extractor, fingers crossed. If not I will look into the Cloudcompare suggestion. I will let you know how it goes.

Cheers,
Phil
