Training Material for University Lecturing
I have been asked to give a 2-3 hour lecture/training session at a local university (25-30 students) on the principles and applications of 3D laser scanning. Before I start to create my own content from supplier manuals and other sources does anyone have links to either training material or better still Powerpoint content? Any material will be used for educational purposes only and credited. Many thanks for any help.

Re: Training Material for University Lecturing
I did a similar thing to a University here in the UK last year.
It's hard to fill 2 hours!
What is the audience? Is it a surveying course where they will understand the basics of surveying already or are you likely to have to touch upon the fundamentals of co-ordinaate calculation as well?
Don't take for granted the stuff that you do and reasons why you do it. S0me of the basics are what people can find really interesting if conveyed in the right direction.
If you are able to, I suggest breaking the session up.
It sounds like you will be able to have a practical session using a scanner.
1. Introduction to Laser scanning.
This is most likely going to have to be Powerpoint driven. Drop in a bit of a live demo of moving around a point cloud to maintain interest.
Maybe compare traditional methods of measurments to laser scanning. Start with the humble tape measure, through to total stations, GPS and laser scanners.
Include pretty images to get their attention of how cool what you are showing them is (but don't start with the money shot, build up to this).
2. Practical laser scan demonstration. Talk about your thought process of why you position the scanner where you have put it. What method of control is being used and why? What are the other methods of control available and why might you use them?
3. Import and register demo data. All the while, re-inforce the survey principles that are being used.
Key feedback I have received that I would share to help you is as long as you are passionate and knowledgable about the subject, you can't go wrong.
Good luck!

Thank you Matthew, The class is part of a Diploma in Surveying and this is the first year survey students. I like your idea about the practical in the middle to give them a break. I thought I might get in a couple of local suppliers and demonstrate the scanners in action, then download and show them the data. I appreciate your very helpful comments.

What !! - 2 hours is easy, I'm only scratching the surface at 1 plus hours. Most manager are telling me to rap it up so the guys can get back to work.

Mildly off subject, Malcolm - did you ever work with Glenn Jowett when he was working for Beca in New Zealand?
He always spoke highly of his time over there and what your company are doing.

Hi Malcolm
You were wanting some of the Dpi-7 Data that I was telling you about the other day.
Here is one of the Fountain Horses at Mission Bay. I'm uploading this to you.
The sandcastle's did not come out to well as - Light as not so flash at 7am - and I was at the maximum range of the unit. What with aphasias over zealous guards not letting me jump the barrier. I can still send them to you if you are keen. Let me know. The Sea Horse is about 2.5m to 3m long - which took under 2min to scan. The Pi3D software joined the data together very very well - The other side looked just as good. If others are keen to get a copy - the .dp file is only 8.5Mb - so some impressive compression. I can send it to you if you email me.

Re: Training Material for University Lecturing
Thanks for you replies. I have found a presentation that Bill Harvey gave at Hexagon 2013 titled "The Basics of 3D Laser Scanning" which has some really good content. Thanks Bill, will give you all the credit (to all the first year Diploma of Surveying students). Regards.

Would be worth looking at the versatility of the technology and the ever expanding array of uses it has.
