Rcp ad rcs viewer

Post by cfoster » Fri Apr 03, 2015 1:38 am

I'm looking for something that will allow a property developer with no experience with point clouds to be able to view and navigate around in a project that is in an rcp format. What would be great is a "Recap Light" that only lets them look around. Any suggestions?

Not sure which scanner you're using, but could you export a TruView or Webshare? Or Newspin could be an option.

I used a faro, and the webshare is in the works, but they want to see the actual point cloud, not just the pictures.

Newspin may work, you can stream the cloud online, prices are not that bad for 20GB of space and a few users . They could then navigate the cloud, although I have not used Newspin yet, but it looks interesting.

this project is around 600GB in the rcp format. They have the point cloud, but no way to see it. Uploading it isn't an option. I just need something like autodesk trueview, only for a point cloud.

Didn't realize that your data set was that large.

600 Gb is quite large..
A couple of ideas come to mind:
Isn't possible for them to install the recap and use it as a viewer?
As an alternative if they have any autodesk product 2014 or 2015 they should be able to attach it in autocad/revit/inventor or almost anything else.
Can you reasonably decimate the point cloud? In Recap when importing you can set filters and a resample grid. For instance for a building setting the filter to 5-10mm will reduce the file size with no quality loss.

If you export to another format you can then check other options.
Arena 4D: the free versions works as a converter to Arena4D format (including subsampling) and a viewer. Great tool for handling large data with little memory footprint. I think you can run it from a USB drive too, the install is self contained. I have to check on a PC with no former versions of Arena installed. With a license you can create clip boxes, notes and a lot of other options to be viewed with the free viewer.

Potree. You can export to LAZ format. Combining with a reasonable decimation the final dataset will be much much much smaller. The dataset can then (maybe) be uploaded or viewed locally installing WAMP and potree. A more geeky solution maybe..

Hi Chris.

Did you consider delivering your data together with SCENE LT? It´s free of cost and your clients would have the best of both world: panoramic views as well as full 3D point cloud access.

To add to that, if you want to give potree a try, take a look at the getting started section. Converting a 600gb dataset will take quite a while but if you use the --generate-page option and convert to your local web server directory, you can watch the result while it's beeing converted. For a dataset of that size I'd try

Code: Select all

./PotreeConverter.exe C:/pointclouds/data -o C:/xampp/htdocs/potree --generate-page -l 10 --output-format LAZ
Input would have to be in tiled las or laz files. rcp is not supported.

I wish I could've used SCENE LT, but the architects were adamant about us converting everything to rcs and rcp. I've shipped the point cloud to them, and the developer has got it from them. He doesn't have any CAD programs, or anything like that, but basically wants to "play" with the cloud. I'm working on a webshare, but he still wants to see the actual cloud and mess with it.
