Hi Phil,
Did you test the solutions proposed by Daniel and others? Did it work out?
I 'd be very interested in some feedback about these!
Especially, I'd be interested in feedback about the amount of triangles a 3Dpdf can store!
Also, I'd be interested in your feedback about the free viewer that allows you to show the 3d data you produced to your customers.
Final idea: a 3d mesh can also be exported to vrml format, which can then be visualized with free plugins for internet browser. Would that fit your needs?
Thanks,

On my side I've just tested the U3D-2-PDF tool (based on Miktex+Meshlab).

It works like a charm on a 350,000 triangles mesh:
http://www.cloudcompare.org/pdf/stanford_armadillo.pdf [9.4 Mb]

The file is much smaller than the original STL file (16.9 Mb - but STL is one of the most stupid format that has ever existed so it's not a good reference ;). It works well in Adobe reader, but not in the Chrome plugin for instance...

When I tried a 850,000 triangles mesh, it took ages to do the conversion (so I had to stop, I need to get some sleep ;).
