3D Reshaper to 3D PDF

Post by LeicaUK_RC »

I'm trying to export and convert some data from 3D Reshaper to a 3D PDF. I know you can simply export a STEP or IGES file but is there any online/free/open source PDF creators?

I've only found paid versions of the software online but I only want to do this once. I don't even mind if it has someone else's logo in the corner, I just want to show my Nelson mesh off to other customers.
Scanned by a customer using a Leica ScanStation C10 but meshed by SCCS - The Survey Equipment Company and TechnoDigit.

Have you tried Meshlab? (http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/)
U3D support; MeshLab is the first open source tool to provide direct conversion of 3D meshes into the U3D format. Now you can create pdf [...]

Hi Phil,

It is true that you can't export to a 3D PDF from 3DReshaper. It is in our TO-DO list, but unfortunately hasn't been done yet.

To help with the sharing of 3DReshaper results, you can use the free Viewer!
http://www.3dreshaper.com/en1/En_downlo ... viewer.htm

Everyone is free to download it from our website. No code is needed, it works directly.
The viewer allows to open a .RSH project exactly as it has been saved, but also to import other objects to visualize them.
It even allows to do "simple" measurements such as measuring distances, coordinates, mesh surfaces, etc.

But don't you need Adobe Acrobat Pro to then create a 3D PDF from the .u3D file? That's my point I don't want to have to buy Adobe Acrobat Pro to do one single file.

In fact you can incorporate a U3D file in a LateX document, which can then be converted to pdf.

To automate this process, there's a small tool: http://sourceforge.net/projects/u3d2pdf/. It converts directly an STL file into a PDF file. You'll just need to install Meshlab and Miktex first (Miktex is a LateX processor).

I just tested it and it worked fine.

P.S.: the first time you'll start the tool you may have to point it to the right location of Meshlab (the "command line" version in fact, named meshlabserver.exe which is just next to Meshlab's main executable). And Miktex will have to download some additional packages (but it's automatic and you'll only have to do it once).

I could not see the pictures first, this mesh looks really nice! Sorry about getting a bit out of the topic now, but the results are very good, pretty clean, with a good level of details! Is it a "real size" statue ?

Hi Jennifer,

Of course its a real life size statue. It sits on top of Nelsons column at Trafalgar square in London.

It was 3D laser scanned from the roof tops of the surrounding buildings with a Leica ScanStation C10. It was then registered and cleaned in Cyclone, then refined again and meshed in 3D Reshaper. :ugeek:
