updated E57 to LAS / LAZ conversion tool e572las

Post by lastools » Sun Nov 11, 2018 10:32 pm

Hello,

The newest version of e572las.exe not only converts E57 files to LAS or LAZ files but also applies any available rotation and/or translation information to each scan to combine multiple scans acquired from different scanner positions into a coherent point cloud ... (-:

Points from different scanner positions are given different point source IDs so that the information which points are belonging to the same scan is preserved.

It's part of LAStools version (180919 or newer) and can be downloaded from

Nice! We've been waiting for something like this. Moving and exporting to PTS for our other cloud tool was cumbersome.
We'll try this on Tuesday

Hello from @LAStools,

also to convert from bulky PTS (or PTX) which are essentially human-readable text files to binary LAS or LAZ files there is a free converter available. If you have a huge PTS file without RGB you can run the free and open source txt2las from LAStools as follows:

Code: Select all

txt2las -i huge.pts -ipts -parse xyzi -set_scale 0.001 0.001 0.001 -o tiny.laz
txt2las -i huge.pts -ipts -parse xyzi -set_scale 0.001 0.001 0.001 -o small.las
if you have a huge PTS file with RGB you can run

Code: Select all

txt2las -i huge.pts -ipts -parse xyziRGB -set_scale 0.001 0.001 0.001 -o tiny.laz
txt2las -i huge.pts -ipts -parse xyziRGB -set_scale 0.001 0.001 0.001 -o small.las
Clayton successfully turned his 315 GB PTS file containing 6,379,507,497 points in ASCII format without RGB into 118 GB binary LAS file. After running LASzip on 118 GB LAS file it went down to a 13.4 GB LAZ file and apparently the Recap software he intends to import this point cloud into does support LAZ.

Going from a 315 GB PTS file to a 13.4 GB LAZ file is a reduction in size by a factor of more than 23. Are there any Leica Cyclone or Geomagic developers on this list? Maybe adding LAZ to the list of supported Cyclone and/or Geomagic output formats might be worthwhile to consider.

Hello from @LAStools,

The latest version of e572las.exe also handles spherical coordinates and can also apply any pose, rotation, transformation to them to get a consistent LAS output as announced in the LAStools user forum.

Absolutely incredible and so appreciated!

Any idea how the scan position could be outputted from this? It's saving per scan info in the point source ID, but on a large data set with many scan positions, it can be difficult figuring out which scan is which when there is a lot of overlap. A .txt file output with scanid,x,y,z would be fantastic if you are taking suggestions ;).

Thanks again! This was an amazing discovery for us yesterday, saves so much time!
