Which mobile scanning solution
Hi All,
Apologies for being a little lazy and not conducting my own research, but my company are looking at purchasing a mobile scanning solution.
I was hoping to get some opinions from the forum of what systems that are in use, what issues to look out for etc.
Also, if there are any companies on here that provide systems to the UK please feel free to send me an email.
I know the x330 can be used with other hardware to act as a mobile scanner, this is something we're interested in a the moment.
Cheers
Richard

Re: Which mobile scanning solution
The Leica Pegasus 2 system might be worth a look at.

Or Renishaws Dynascan system.

If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Hi,
Topcon have been developing mobile-mapping systems for 10 years and have over 1,200 systems in operation globally. We have just launched our 3rd Generation system, the IPS3, which combines an extremely compact mapping unit, with a comprehensive suite of software offering a very simple workflow from data collection through to processing and deliverables.

Matt,
I can give you advice from a LiDAR processor point of view if you tell me what is your application. I have seen data from all kinds of systems and I can give you pros and cons from the extraction side.

Re: Which mobile scanning solution
I am researching this at the moment. I contacted Faro distributors here in Austalia, but no reply yet. Leica Pegasus works on a similar manner. It's just a housing for a scanner + cameras + software. With a x330 it can be done cheaper, but you won't have pictures. Although I am sure a solution can be found.rb5543 wrote: I know the x330 can be used with other hardware to act as a mobile scanner, this is something we're interested in a the moment.

Re: Which mobile scanning solution
We use a VMX250 / 450 which give resonable results. We also had a demo of a street mapper system a few year ago which was pretty good too. Both systems are pretty expensive though. If you are doing a comparison key things to look at are points per second or I think it is measured in hertz on a mobile system and the IMU (inertial measurement unit) specs. A good IMU is important, and can cost hundreds of thousands dollars.
There are a few players in the MLS space in Australia and two of the main ones use Riegl scanners.
Cheers

Re: Which mobile scanning solution
I would suggest Riegl MLS systems and in general in my opinion there are following key facts to be considered for selecting other systems:
- High accuracy IMU
- The density that you get at the speed of 40 ~ 50 km/h, for feature extraction you need at least 180 pt/m^2
- Noise, I would say not more that 10 ~ 15 mm
- Intensity resolution which is very important to extract linework for flat features and some Automatic feature extraction functions such as road marks.
- High resolution calibrated imagery helps for interpretation of services like manholes, pits and etc.
- Ability to involve control points for registration
- Accuracy, depends on application obviously
Cheers

Re: Which mobile scanning solution
Thanks to everyone for taking the time to provide all the information,
Mobile mapping is something i don't know too much about but i have loads to work on.
We have been experimenting with some mobile mapping solutions which i will share once we get some quantifiable data.

Re: Which mobile scanning solution
LIDAR USA concentrates on incorporating terrestrial scanners like the x330 into mobile scanners by connecting into the mobile control board on the bottom of the x330.rb5543 wrote: I know the x330 can be used with other hardware to act as a mobile scanner, this is something we're interested in a the moment.
They add the extra hardware - like Velodyne scanners, GPS and other hardware to create mobile scanners to use on a range of vehicles. A good way to extend a terrestrial scanner to mobile use.

Re: Which mobile scanning solution
Are you familiar with 3D Laser mapping company, that are based in UK?
3D Laser Mapping is developing their own mobile mapping solution integrating one of the best sensors currently available in the market.
The new Streetmapper system is based on Riegl VUX scanner and IGI IMU + a Ladybug camera option is available.
It is a really compact and easy to use system.
You can find some more info at the 3DLM webpage.
