"Dust" in the pictures but not the scan data?

Post by smcintosh »

We recently did a scan (P40 Internal Camera) of a building, inside and out, but the inside pictures came out very grainy. Here are a couple screen shots of one of the scans. There are no particles in the scan data, but the pictures are unusable. Any ideas why, how do I fix it?

The camera on the P40 isnt all that good in low light - all the noise/grains is its poor ISO ability. IF you need to take images in lower light use an iStar or for even more control over the iso/noise the Nodal Ninja with a good dslr on it.

Can i take a guess that your settings were HDR and medium resolution?

steves01x - Yes Sir they were. We also did a couple scans in the lobby area using "cold light" settings and it was almost pitch black. In this room we used HDR and "Warm light" and this is the results.

I would export the cube maps into a photo editing program like Photo Shop. Then after adjusting the images, re-import.

When we use a P40, we never use the internal camera. Whilst its results are what I would call 'ok', it's nowhere near the quality of an iStar.

+1 for the istar. We used it at night to survey an airport apron. It's a really good bit of kit for photographing in the dark. I'd like to see an updated version with better lens and larger image sensor though.

+1 for iStar also. the low light quality & speed compared to the time and quality of the P40 its worth the investment or hire cost. Your going from 15 minutes to less than 1 minute.

We have the iStar as well as a couple of Canon cameras. The beauty of the external cameras have one great plus to us, we can take extra photos and use the best of each. Also we can clean and edit the photos way easier due to the number of photos.

If image quality is the important then the DSLR option would have to be used. But for jobs that just require colour RGB then the iStar. I would tend to try and avoid using the internal camera unless its only a handful of scans per day as it slows you down far too much.

It's good to see the practical example of night shift survey with IStar when the light is poor.
So I see, you played more with ISO setting but was it consuming time on site at the night?
Cool thanks.
