Alignment of scans : GPS ?

Post by myvisuals »

Hello,

I'm new so i have to follow lessons at FARO netherland... In the meantime i'm do already some basic scans.
First problem, the scans are aligned on the Z axes, but in realtime they are placed in 3 different rooms.
GPS is active, what can be the problem ? Auto-clustering is active.

Regards
Vincent

Hi Vincent,
a question: did you enable GPS and did you get a signal? It's shown under sensors->GPS and will show a small icon on the display - by the way I never get a correct GPS signal indoor, but never truly tried indoor, because GPS definitely is an outdoor function!

The scans are positioned at zero zero by default, with altimeter applied! After registration they will be aligned and in one height...
The altimeter will change even if you are not moving the scanner, but open a door or window - because it's barometric ;)

Regards
Stefan

If you are indoor then GPS is not going to work and you don't want it to work if you are getting signal.

Hi Vincent,

If you try to register without references, you should use the "top view based" registration! Without targets, you can place the scans with use of the properties of a scan! Properties->Sensors there is a button "place scan using sensors". If the GPS fields are empty (N/A) the GPS data was not recorded! I will take a look, if there is another possibility to place the scans according to the Sensors! But remember, Scanner GPS is only a help for placing of scans! The accuracy is not comparable to real GPS poles/stations/rovers! It's designed to have a preorientation, like the compass is, I did not calculate the deviation of the GPS at this moment (too leas scans with GPS available for me). The compass has a deviation of several degrees (in my case) depending on the surrounding - in a plant it's more, on a field it's less ;)

Without "top view bases registration" you will need targets...

I assume you have SCENE 5.3.3!

Stefan

Hi Vincent,
I did some tests this morning (in real, I ask a colleague to do some scans, because I had a meeting ;) )!
Our system was very slow with getting some GPS data! The fist scan is missing the values (reporting N/A in the properties), but the second one had some values stored! If imported to SCENE, all scans with GPS data were positioned according to the GPS values but in an unusual way, with small coordinates! Because we had bad conditions this morning, we had an error of some meters! But they are not placed at zero zero!
Our indoor scans did not store GPS data, although the scanner was told to do. I guess, if the data is too bad, it is not stored...

In your case, I think there was no contact to the satellites and therefore you have no GPS values stored,..

Cheers
Stefan

Hello Stefan,

Only 2 scans are good placed after the "place scan auto". The other 2 gives problems...
I'm new so it's possible i do something wrong.
It is a testscan of my house... for experimenting... Do you have time to look to the original scna files?
I can send them to you... This would be very kind.

Hi Vincent!

This afternoon I have some time to assist you! If you are able to upload your data somewhere, I will take a look and will make suggestions (Video or something else) related to your project! Send me an pm ;)

Did you use the "top view based" registration first?
Move the upper slider a tick left - step by step - until a registration works!

Other possibility is, to move the two small clusters to the "big" cluster! Properties->transformation: you have to click into the x ,y or z edit field and move the scans! For big movements use the correspondence view! If you click a scan or cluster in this view, you will get translation or rotation handles! When finished moving, you have to improve the result with use of the "cloud to cloud" (c2c) registration.

I am limited in my PC access over work time because I am on the road ;)

Good luck!

Cheers
Stefan
