Check out http://www.transcendrobotics.com/. $3500 for a fully functional Tele-presence robot! It can be remotely controlled with a 4G hotspot on-board. the incredible thing about spot is it seems to be electric... and judge by the unpretentious cars in the BD parking lot looks like they have the alot more dev coming...

but here is the really interesting concern... these computer vision guys building robots that solve some of our industry "challenges" before lunch... in a fully robotic construction future what will be our role if any? establishing control for robots?

At the Riegl 2015 conference in HKG, SKUR displayed a prototype of their robot which has the ability to include other sensors beyond the standard Lidar, RGB and thermal sensors. At the exhibit area was itres, a Canadian company with a hyperspectral sensor that could be placed on the robot.

It is currently running in manual control mode, but will be in autonomous mode in the future.

I have no detailed information at this time to answer those questions. The Riegl 2015 closed this afternoon, and the exhibition closed with it.

Holy crap those robots are cool. JANR, nice.. that is cool, just a little afraid if you figure out that elevator push button thing that you may be putting us out of jobs sooner than later..

Those robots that get kicked and compensate and don't fall over look freakishly like how animals walk and react to their environment. I think if that thing came galloping through an office building it would be like a terminator movie rise of the machines or something and it would freak people out.

Laser scanners were blowing my mind a year ago before I had access to one, now this.. I can't wait to see what happens next year.

Jonathan, one question how do you upload the files to onedrive when your not there with the scanner, I need to figure this trick out, could I setup the faro to somehow upload scans to autodesk 360 and then sync with my computer, that would be nice..

The interesting focus of the SKUR presentation is the use of sensor and point cloud data for construction and facilities management companies utilizing available sensor technologies and cloud processing of data. The use of cloud processing using 600 to 1,000 cores reduces time from days to hours compared with desktop processing of 4 to 8 cores. This allows the visualization of variance in complex and rapidly changing environments such as construction and facilities asset management.

Hi John, It is an easy but somewhat complicated setup. You must have some sort of small computer within wifi range of the scanner. I used an old $200 netbook, but I have been looking into smaller computers like tablets, pico itx boxes, and mobile phones. To achieve this in the absence of a robotic platform, it would be nice to have something small that can mount to the tripod, but if you will always be near the scanner then you could use a larger device. Any device you use must be cabable of two simultaenous network interfaces, one to connect to the scanner the other to connect to 4g. Unfortunatley that rules out most mobile phones. With the netbook we used the internal wifi card plus another usb wifi card. We connect one to scanner and the other to our 4g hotspot. Some mobile tablets have both a wifi card and a 4g modem, so I have been researching to figure out if that would be viable. After connecting to the scanner you can access the SDcard via the scanner's ftp. Using a program called "free-sync" you can set the ftp as the source path and choose a local onedrive folder as your destination. The program will allow you to configure and save a sequence to compare the directories then perform an append copy to the destination drive. This sequence can be scheduled to run every minute or so using windows event scheduler.

Now that I typed it all out it doesn't sound that easy :lol: Maybe I shouod create a video tutorial for the setup. We have considered this setup to send scan files back to the office to be registered and proccessed immediatley, but thise instances in which we have needed such a compressed schedule we have opted to just swap SDcards in the field and proccess then on site with a good laptop.

It would be nice to have a sim card and modem in the scanner with an automatic sync proccess but due to the fact that only smaller scans can be transfered in a reasonable amount of time I doubt any manufacturer is making plans for future integration.

Now that is impressive. I have been studying into Web Services like AWS, Azure, etc. to see if it would be benificial with our setup. I can imagine a tablet to view the server interface to monitor and nurse the proccess along would be useful if you wanted to proccess while you are in the field. I hole to get a chance to see the Skurbot at the next conference.
