At least we TOF users can put in some decent control while we wait ;)

Here is a 6 minute C10 scan converted to a panoramic image using LFM

As I think already said, its the software package that generates the pano, however, the 5010C kinda blurs the line as it takes its images in its own .zfi format, when we download the scanner and open Z+F LaserControl its only a couple of clicks and it turns the .zfi data into panoramic .jpgs.

Below is an example for my current project, from a 5010c and auto generated using LaserControl, this is scaled down to 10%. I'm pretty impressed by this kit, here the relatively dark pipework is silhouetted(sp?) against the relatively bright sky and the dynamic reange is plenty good enough to resolve the pipes ok.

Picture posted for this purpose only, please do not post/share elsewhere and I don't want copyright/ip etc issues..

How do you find the scanner performs on a MEWP? Do you find the data is noticeably degraded at all?

Thanks,

Tim

Good morning David,

I hope you are doing well. The IMAGER 5010C is the only scanner on the market that utilizes an integrated HDR (high dynamic range) camera to give you the best possible image. Through our LaserControl software's automatic color mapping feature, you are able to create the HDR 360 degree panoramic image. The software generates a colorized point-cloud and also a full 360 panoramic image that our customers use for virtual tours and other applications. For more information please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Clements

@ Tim
..I find it a p.i.t.a. to be honest see below which is pipes inside a refinery pipe-bridge.

Saying that, after many thousands of scans I've learn the following..

1- Use a good scanmonkey. One that not only recognises the MEWP is moving but cares enough to repeat the scan, even on a Friday afternoon.
2- Minimize any movement - turn off the diesel and wait for vibrations to settle, get the operator something to sit on and if safe then rest the "basket" against a structure. We've also fabricated a simple mount that fits the scanner to the side of the basket, its more stable and has a better view of the structure than putting up a tripod.
3- Process with care. Here we're pipe modelling so a "wobble" is not a problem as we can model though it but it is important to check the overlap at the start/stop of the scan to see that it actually does stop where it started. I'm also employing a 20m range filter upon completing the registration as I dont want the client questioning the accuracy of points faaar from the scanner.

Basically its a necessary evil that can be done with care but should be avoided if possible. Like eating celery..

Richard.

@Richard Merrin.

That pano looks real nice. I just have a few questions:

1. Is the camera built into the scanner?
2. Does it expose multiple tiles like the Leica scanners?
3. Is the HDR blending automatic?
4. How long does image capture take?

Currently we use a nodal camera solution for leica scanners - it takes ages to stitch to the point cloud and the results are sometimes less than ideal. The internal camera on the C10 and the P20 just isn't up to the standards that our clients are asking for.

1, Yes
2, Yes but not as many.
3, Yes.
4, Image capture is slower than with the Ninja, infact quite annoyingly slow. Off the top of my head 2-3 minutes, I haven't used it in the field for about a year so I can't remember exactly. The upside is to generate a batch or panoramas with Laser Control is just a few clicks and leave it running. Processing time on a decent workstation is about 10mins/scan.

Yeah, I'm a fan of leica scanners but for colour scans I'd take the 5010c in a heartbeat.

Richard.
