What scanners can produce Panoramic Images?

Post by ddustin »

Forgive my ignorance, but what scanners can create/produce/export panoramic images?
Thanks in advance for any information.

Not sure any scanner can, but some software might.
Cyclone can but not directly ie there is not Pano export, but if you puplish a truview you do get perfect cube maps which most software can read as a Pano or convert it to a spherical or Pano.

Steve,
The FARO SCENE software can export a panoramic image from a scan.
Would you happen to have any examples?
Thanks,

Hi David,

pointcab generate panoramic images from different Laserscanner producer.
The panoramic images generated by pointcab are as equirectangular images as *.jpg or *.png

More information to pointcab webexport tool:

David, If you export the scene workspace as a Webshare High and Low definition panoramic images are created for each scan and stored in the Webshare directories. They will look flat in a standard image viewer, but there are many other viewers that can wrap them into a spherical image.

It is the software that will generate the panoramic image, this is why it is important to keep the original scan data if only as an archive. The LFM software and I guess other systems will generate panoramic images from numerous scanner formats. As soon as you start decimating points to reduce file sizes this then really prevents panoramic images being generated as data is lost.

Phases based scanners don't need to be run at the highest resolution to generate panoramics, this all depends on the range. You can generate panoramics from TOF scanners but I guess you would have to be patient when scanning.

Hi David, mate, the I-Site 8800 produces full high resolution panoramic images rendered automatically onto the 3D point cloud. Happy to send examples to your personal email if interested?

Cheers,

Jason

We have also tested exporting a panorama from inside 3ds max, where a point cloud has been imported, lighting applied and vehicles inserted (it turned out really cool actually).

David, So I registered the scans and followed your YouTube video on exporting scans to images and then imported them into photoshop to resize the image to 1892x4000? Excellent Excellent! What now? Do the individual raster pixels in the photo have accurate coordinate values? (You would think there would just be an x and y) How do panoramic photo viewers work with scan data within State Plane Coordinates? Or how can a camera get registered to survey control? Is it a software thing I need to look into?

Research and Development never ends. Ha ha

I don't think this uses scanner tech but I thought it might be of some interest to you.
