For those of you that are interested, I was just informed that CBS will be airing a show this Saturday November 30 at 10 pm ET called “Walking Free”. There is supposed to be a short clip of me with the scanner and some of my shooting reconstruction work, but I have no clue as to what or how much they have included.

I've just had a meeting with a TV producer who are looking to produce a documentary relating to fatal hit and run collisions. We've had a couple of very unpleasant ones this year. The programme is looking at both the impact on families and witnesses together with the science of how we go about our business.

I mentioned that the scene was scanned in snow amongst other benefits it brought. The producers ears picked up at the mention of a laser scanner and wanted to know more. When it gets to air I'll let you all know. He seemed surprised it worked in the cold! I know I try to avoid that myself but when needs must...

I had a lengthy Coroners Court last Friday that involved a pedestrian knock down.
Archie Wellbelove a student walking home after a night out.

The County Council started a cost cutting exercise of turning off street lights. The Coroner gave the UK's first narrative verdict and that made the Daily Mail and a good debate on Radio Two Jeremy Vine Show on Monday.

I had scanned the scene and included views from Pointools. I got to explain laser scanning to HM Coroner and he was really receptive. A couple of reporters collared me afterwards but nothing mentioned in their reports.

Well, here are the internet links to the CBS show.

The first one is the whole show story and I made 10 seconds in the show!

The second is part of the "Extras" on the website.

Eugene,
Take a 'pat on the back'...the second part 'extras', is really good.
You've definitely put laser scanning on the forensic map.

Highly envious and I'll buy you a beer one day :D

Great work

Fantastic work Eugene, you ought to be very proud and this is an excellent, high-profile step forward.

Was your conclusion based on that of a BSPA experts examination of your reconstruction, or were you able to use your expertise to make inferences about the blood transfer from the 3D model?

I was involved in a number of areas and worked with several experts on this case including the DNA scientist, bloodstain pattern experts and crime scene reconstructionists. The interview and recording with CBS was about 3 hours long and when you cut that down to 10 seconds on the show and about 1 minute or so in the website "extra", you lose a lot of the context of what I am saying.

The evidence most central to the case was the t-shirt with bloodstains on the lower left side ("area 30") . For my reconstruction, I showed that the most likely position of the shooter would not have allowed for back spatter to have hit his shirt in the left area and that some of the other suggested positions of the shooter were lacking in consistency with other evidence.

Lots more that could be said here, but I think it's one of those things that's better left to discuss in person over a couple of cold ones.

Cheers!

Ah the work of the editor..! It is unfortunate you could not have had more input on the final version in order to retain the necessary context, or ay least a better attempt to have a more rounded view in your 10s - perhaps should have pushed for 12s!!

Great bit of work nonetheless!

"The Only Thing Necessary for the Triumph of Evil is that Good Men Do Nothing" Eugene you are certainly pulling your weight! I watched the entire episode and the extras last night, and without sounding too cheesy, I am honored to know you and to call you friend. Finding some truth in that mess, must have been quite the challenge. Keep up the good work, and the same goes to the rest of you guys :P

It was pretty surprising to see how much CBS held back on the disturbing imagery. It was completely docile compared to the reality of the events. Eugene is there a chance that you will be able to speak more about this case at future conferences? It is a story that deserves to be repeated.
