I just had a chance to play with a S350 scanner and after having a close look at the menus, I noticed that there was a "night mode" option for the color settings. From what it said on the scanner, you use this mode to reduce noise in the photogtraphs at night. There is an increase in capture time but not as much as using HDR. In fact, if you have night mode on, HDR turns off by default.
So, here are my testing conditions and results:
Night Mode Testing
1st Scan
Even WEighted
Scan Ttime: 3:34
2nd Scan
Horizon Weighted
Scan Time: 4:44
3rd Scan
Even Weighted and Night Mode
Scan Time: 7:10
4th Scan
Horizon Weighted and Night Mode
Scan Time: 10:00
Note that the time reported on the scanner is the same regardless if Night Mode is enabled or not. However, from the results, you can see there is an increase in time. I am guessing that they can't report the true time since this is dependent on the exposure. It's also possible that under different lighting conditions, by times could change slightly.
So, for the scans that were taken with Even Weighted Exposure:
Scans with Horizon Weighted
You can see the Horizon Weighted Exposure was overexposed in some of the more brightly lit areas but in both cases there is a clear reduction in image noise.
Another trick to keep in your back pocket!
Cheers,
Eugene

Re: Night Mode For Crime Scenes?
That is an interesting feature to explore, Eugene. I can easily see how this would help with my scans (assuming I can ever get my hands on an S350!). What were your resolution and quality settings? Did you leave the settings the same for the various scans?

They were low...1/8, 2X quality. I don't like to wait.
