Re: Choice for 2D scanning device

Post by mzhoum »

We are moving hard in exploring/developing Faro's Focus 3D helical application on railway. We have tested the TTL mode of the interface and detected the trigger_out signals once we input traigger_in pulse. I am wanting to ask Oliver with Faro or other helpful guys:
(1) Can Faro Scene support the processing for helical scanning point-cloud data?
(2) We found the Scene was not stable to load and dispay the helical data, it was often pop-up error message windows saying error reading files. The helical scanning data should be considered as special 3D data, why so special not letting the Scene for processing like normal 3D point-cloud data ?
(3) We have been no one told if the Scene can be used to export the Faro helical point-cloud into the xyz format ? We are still having problem in doing that and want to make sure from Faro.
Many thanks in advance,
MIchael

Hello Michael.

Scene is meant to deal with 3D laser scan data. Data recorded in helical mode is missing the 3rd dimension - that´s why Scene cannot display them in 3D view or QuickView.
In Planar View, you should get an image representing each scan line as one column in the Planar View. The readings for distance and vertical angle will be correct. The horizontal angle will be missing, of course.

The way best to use the Focus3D for helical scanning vehicles is to control it with our SDK. This will allow you to
a) control the scanner via your own software
b) read the binary scan files into your software

To get hold of the SDK, please contact your local sales person or your local FARO support team.

Oliver, Thanks for your reply.

We are little by little moving with the helical application. The problems continued to pop-up. We successfully tested a helical scanning and had the data file *.fls. We exported it with Faro Scene to *.xyz file for another software for processing. The *xyz file has the format "a b c d e f " with the five non-zero elements. We believed that a,b,c are the space coordinates and d,e,f are colors R/G/B.

(1) Is our understanding correct ?
(2) Why the 3D rather than 2D coordinates displayed ?
(3) Why the RGB color rather than white/black displayed ?
(4) What is the unit of the coordinates, meter ?

How can we access to your supporting resources for help understanding ?
Thank you for further advice us.

Hello Micheal.

XYX export is not suitable to access helical scan data. The coordinates you are exporting a 3D coordinates - but the data you were recording (helical scan mode) are not. They only consist of vertical angles and distances.
To access this data you would need to user our SDK which will allow you to read out the original measurements from the scanns (angle, distance and reflectance).

In term of getting the SDK to you, please send me a private email and I will provide you with the necessary NDA.

Hi, Oliver, thanks a lot for your info. We have had SDK package already
I would liko to hold our previous discussion for time being and ask you about basic Faro helical scan data structure knowledge. In Scanner parameters setup, the Faro Laser Scaner LS Helical-Mode manual ( I believe that is for 120) said: the user has to enter an expected number of "columns", Now the Faro Focus 3D automation interface manual says: enter an expected number of "scan lines"...What are Faro's definations ? Are the data column and the scan line same >
They might be basic terms/questions but now confuse me. Could you help or refer to some technical one for more explanations?

For one year's work we have basically figured out the system architecture and data-processing techniques in turning the helical 2D scanning into 3D point-clouds.

We are looking for some software that provides as a tool for editing and analyzing the point-cloud data from the helical scanning.

Can Oliver or someone else who might know with more experinces give advice ?
