Hi,
we are an Israel base scanning bureau, and lately we had been trying to introduce the technology in the oil tank calibration market. We find that the scanners lack of fire/explosion proof certificate might be a show stopper, or at least a limiter... and I wanted to ask the forum whether you had experienced this issue as well, and how had you manged to bridge it...
thanks in advance
Gabriel

Hi Gabriel,
Z+F produce an EX rated scanner but it costs $$$$, maybe such a scanner can be rented?
We do tank scans but only when the tanks have been drained and flushed for us or when they are having a full inspection / maintenance period to include radar scans of the base and scheduled maintenance etc. In Northern Europe it would be unthinkable to scan in a live or unflushed tank even with an EX scanner to be honest, you would never get permission.
Richard.

Re: fire/ explosion proof certificates...
Richard thanks for your comment.
We work with Faro focus and are also expecting to work on drained and cleaned tanks, but even though the expectation is to work with explosion proof equipment. We haven't scanned the interior of oil tanks yet, but we did scanned in oil refineries where the explosion proof regulation was also a must... and we managed to receive waivers after going trough checks and tests...
in this case I think it will be harder to wave the regulation...

I do these often for a refinery. I am sure you have this but, we use a continuous monitor set on the scanner tripod. Usually they let us do this after the tank has been well ventilated. Can you do it from the outside?

Re: fire/ explosion proof certificates...
We're the same as Dave says, we ALWAYS have a continuous gas monitor with the scanner as standard procedure, we'd never get a work permit without this precaution. The "control room" can usually provide such a detector. If we have a total station as well then we need 2 detectors etc.

Good afternoon Gentleman,
In the United States we do rent the IMAGER 5006EX. I just wanted to put this out there to any U.S. based customers. Please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I can also forward your request to a re-seller in your area and our German headquarters that could also set you up with a potential rental. I look forward to hearing from you.
