High precision large volume scanning

Post by mls »

Survey and modelling of furnace pipe erosion.
We have developed a novel method for surveying and modelling erosion of pipe walls in boilers (furnace side), using high precision 3d laser scanning. Sub millimetre accuracy between 2 to 20 metres offset range. Using remote deployment it is possible to survey a 30 x 10 x 40m boiler in hours. No scaffolding required.

Good work Paul, very well presented.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Very good idea.
Have you tested the repeatability of your solution?
Do you have to have the model before starting your scanning or do you scan, model and apply the proper radiuses and then compare scan to model?
Cheers

Dan.
The intention in this case is to identify small regions which may be susceptible to pipe failure, by highlighting areas of wall erosion on the surface of a boiler pipe in a furnace. In practice this kind of survey has to be carried out in a very small window of opportunity, and also through rather small ports in the furnace wall. Given the nature of the environment there are difficulties in setting up a control.
So far as CAD modelling & comparative analysis are concerned, there are also problems arising from the real world nature of "straight" pipes and "uniform" bends, neither of which exist in reality. The workflow is therefore a subtle blend of craft and science, which is a small comfort in this age of deskilling and algorithms.
Cheers
Paul

Very nicely presented. 8-)

It looks like the analysis was done in Reshaper?
